FILM ARTS Chandler Levack, Writer and Filmmaker Chandler Levack is a writer and filmmaker in Toronto. She studied film at the University of Toronto and received an Honours Bachelors of Arts in Cinema Studies in 2011. She was the Editor in Chief of The Varsity Newspaper from 2007 to 2009, which is the oldest and largest student newspaper in Canada. Her writing has appeared in SPIN, The Village Voice, Toronto Life, The National Post, The Toronto Star, Rollingston.com, The AV Club and NOW Magazine, amongst other publications. HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION Rochelle Mayers, BA(Kinesiology) Head of Health,Physical Education & Athletic Department, Vaughan Road Academy Rochelle is the current Head of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Departments at Vaughan Road Academy. Rochelle graduated with an Honours Bachelor degree in Kinesiology from the University of Western and has been highly involved in sport both as an educator as well as an athlete. In high school Rochelle competed in provincial level ringette, basketball and volleyball in addition to participating in soccer, badminton, gymnastics, track and field and ultimate Frisbee. He received his Masters of Education at the University of Alberta, and afterward attended George Brown’s Cucina Italiana graduate program. Martin is a decorated multi-lingual educator who was awarded Ontario’s best high school teacher in 2007. He works tirelessly towards breaking down barriers for all students so that they can – and will – be successful in school. Recently, Martin returned from a busy and fun filled summer of teaching a co-op program in Hong Kong for Ontario students. ARCHITECTURE & ARTS EDUCATION Christopher Nokes, B. Sc (Arch.) Author, Architect, Educator Jack of all trades, Christopher Nokes, is a published author, architect, and has been a visual arts, design and International Baccalaureate teacher here at Vaughan Road Academy for the past 14 years. Christopher received his degree in Architecture from the University of Toronto, and worked as an architect for 20 years before beginning his career in education. Christopher is a published author with a number of works under his belt. Earlier this year his inspirational video exhibition, ‘I Am Standing in the Place Where I Live’ featured the work of four Grade 9 Kenyan students showing their concept of public and private places showed at the Design Exchange for the CONTACT Photography Festival to glowing reviews. He has a wife and 3 sons who live in Toronto. 8 EMERGENCY SERVICES - POLICE Cindy Chung and Felix Tam Police Officer Cindy Chung has been a police constable for 7.5 years. She began her duties as a uniform patrol officer for 6 years and then spent 6 months at TAVIS before moving to the Recruiting Unit where she currently works. Her current role is to recruit and mentor new police candidates through the process of becoming a police constable. Come hear her speak if you are interested in becoming a future police candidate. Felix Tam was an officer with the Peel Regional Police Service for 20 years before jumping ship to Toronto. Since coming to TPS in 2009, I have worked in uniform patrol, TAVIS and now the Employment Unit as a background investigator and a recruiter. EMERGENCY SERVICES - PARAMEDICS Joel D’Eath and Nick Jackson Paramedics Joel D'Eath is an Advanced Care Paramedic and Acting District Superintendent working in the Region of Peel. After attending Vaughn Road Academy, Joel briefly flirted with the idea of studying computer science before coming to his senses to attend Humber College's Primary Care Paramedic program, graduating in 2001. In 2004 Joel returned to Humber College to train as an Advanced Care Paramedic and he hasn't looked back. Nick Jackson is an Advanced Care Paramedic working land ambulance in the Region of Peel and District of Muskoka. Following his undergraduate education at Athabasca University (BSc. Human Sciences and Physiology) Nick attended the Primary Care Paramedic Program at CTS Canadian Career College. In 2012 Nick certified as an Advanced Care Paramedic after successfully completing the Advanced Care Paramedic program at Georgian College. 9 EMERGENCY SERVICES - FIREFIGHTER Captain Paul Fortuna Firefighter Captain Paul is a member of the Toronto Fire Services in the fire prevention and public education division. He has spent countless hours presenting to students about careers in fire services and how to keep safe from a fire and during a fire. Having worked for the City of Toronto for 24 years he has lots of great stories to tell. Paul first started working as a Civil Engineer in the City of York and has worked as an Auxiliary Police officer. He has three boys and a wife how is a teacher with the TDSB. ENERGY/SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES Samantha MacHardy Energy Analyst, LEED AP BD +C, Provident Energy Management Samantha MacHardy works as an Energy Analyst with Provident Energy Management. As an energy analyst, she works to help architects and developers reduce energy use in new construction and encourage sustainable building practices. Samantha graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelors of Architectural Science with a specialization in Building Sciences. 10 DANCE FITNESS Popi Spyridis Zumba and Fitness Instructor, Ballroom and Latin Dancer and Entrepreneur Popi Spyridis is a Zumba instructor, a certified CanFitPro Fitness Instructor Specialist (FIS) and a Ballroom and Latin dance instructor. She also works full-time as an Executive assistant at PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers). SPORTS FITNESS Max Taylor, BA St. Lawrence University, New York Professional Hockey Player/Land Developer Max Taylor has fulfilled the childhood dream of many Canadian boys by playing hockey professionally. Max started playing hockey at the age of 6 and went on to play minor league hockey at various levels, for several years. Although Max rarely played at the highest level for his age group, he worked hard to follow his passion and in 2003, he was recruited for the NCAA to play for St. Lawrence University in upstate New York on a full scholarship. Following his graduation in 2007, Max began his professional hockey career with the Texas Wildcatters and eventually played for the Toronto Marlies from 2007 to 2009 and trained with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After suffering a career ending concussion in 2009, Max transitioned his first passion for professional sports into a successful career in land development and real estate. NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION Gita Jaffe, P.hD (Human Rights), Clemson University , South Carolina Consultant/Executive Director Gita Jaffe is a child-welfare specialist, and the founder of Africa's ChildrenAfrica's Future (AC-AF). Her dedication to community development began in 1995. Since then, Gita has worked on four continents specializing in; refugee issues, sport and development, and the AIDS epidemic. She earned her PhD from Clemson University, where she focused on children’s rights, health, and education policy. Gita is very passionate about her work and has many great stories to tell. 15 PROJECT MANAGEMENT Andrea Willerding, Assistant Project Manager, Tridel/Deltera Inc Andrea Willerding is the current Assistant Project Manager at Tridel/ Deltera Inc. After finishing high school Andrea completed a degree in Architectural Science from the University of Ryerson. She initially started working at Tridel as a Site Clerk where she managed trade work for 5 years. She later requested a move into the Project Management team where she handles aspects of development, planning, contracts, scheduling and budgeting for on- going construction projects. She has held this position for five years. IT/ENGINEERING Mirjana Djuric, M.Sc Engineering System Developer Engineer Mirjana has worked in a number of positions involving Information Technology (IT) and Engineering over the last 10 years. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade in Serbia, Mirjana went on to build a very progressive career in Information Technology. Some of the positions she has held as a free-lance engineer include: developer, system designer, system architect and manager. She has worked for many high profile organizations including the Bank of Montreal, OAO Technology Solutions and Sears, Toronto Hydro, Health Canada and the Ontario Power Authority and is currently working as a project manager. 16 POLITICS Carolyn Bennett, M.D MPP St. Paul’s Riding Toronto A self-described “accidental tourist” in politics, The Hon. Dr. Carolyn Bennett, M.D., M.P. helped lead the charge in the fight to save Women's College Hospital, as a doctor, without really knowing that was 'politics'. Carolyn was first elected to the House of Commons in Ottawa in the 1997 general election representing the electoral district of St. Paul’s in Toronto. As a member of Prime Minster Paul Martin’s cabinet, Carolyn served as the first ever Minister of State for Public Health. During her tenure she established the Public Health Agency of Canada as well as the Public Health Network. While in opposition, Carolyn served as Health Critic and the critic for Democratic Renewal. She is currently the Liberal critic for Aboriginal Affairs and the Chair of Liberal Women’s Caucus. She and her husband, Canadian film producer Peter O’Brian, have two sons and a chocolate lab named Marley. POLITICS Anthony Schein, MA (Politics and Communications) Executive Assistant of Councillor Joe Mihevc Anthony Schein attended the Interac program at Vaughan Road Academy from 1997-1999. While a student at Vaughan, Anthony first became politically active during strikes by both teachers and support staff and during the public debate over education reforms. Anthony has studied politics and communications as an undergraduate and graduate student. Through a field placement program while studying at York University, Anthony interned for Toronto City Councillor Joe Mihevc in 2008 which eventually lead to full-time work. Over the past five years, Anthony has worked in communications, labour relations, and politics. He has managed two election campaigns at the municipal and provincial level, and worked on numerous other issues and election campaigns both locally and nationally. He recently returned to Toronto City Hall, as a Councillor Mihevc’s Executive Assistant.” 17 SUPPORT SERVICES – CHILD/YOUTH CARE WORKERS Shereen Callender and Kirsti Conway Child and Youth Care Workers Shereen Callender is a Child and Youth worker who studied at George Brown College and Ryerson University. With her passion for trouble and hard to serve youth Shereen has won many awards in making a change in young people’s lives. Currently working for Toronto District School Board and Peel Children’s aid she still finds time to volunteer at a local youth center to help change her community. “There are no bad children just bad choices” is a quote Shereen lives by to help serve our youth. Kristi Conway is a Child and Youth Counsellor with over 15 years’ experience working with youth from diverse communities. She is a graduate of the George Brown College’s Child and Youth Worker program and has a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care with Honours from Ryerson University. Her career began in children’s mental health treatment centres and has ranged from youth justice to education. Currently she is supporting youth mental health within a school setting at Vaughan Road academy. Kristi also runs a psycho-educational support group called “Girls Talk” for all female students at Vaughan Road. SUPPORT SERVICES - SOCIAL WORKER Ligia Faria, BA, MA (Social Work) University of Toronto Social Worker Ligia Faria is a licensed social worker with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s of Social Work degree from the University of Toronto. Ligia initially worked in the Child welfare setting for 3 years before being hired with the Toronto District School Board in 1984. She covers 6 schools and is part of a multidisciplinary team. 18 SUPPORT SERVICES – PSYCHOLOGY Ashley Morgan, PhD Candidate PhD Candidate, Clinical and Developmental Psychology, Psychologist Ashley is completing her PhD in the Clinical Developmental Psychology program at York University. She completed her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Crime and Deviance at U of T (Mississauga) and her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at York University. She is currently completing her doctoral internship in school psychology as a Psycho-educational Consultant with the Toronto District School Board. Krista was first bit by the travel bug on her grade 12 trip to Spain, an experience which changed her life. After her trip, her love and curiosity for travel led her to pursue a degree in Tourism Marketing Management. What she enjoys most about being a part of the Face To Face Team at EF is having the opportunity to interact with the amazing staff who all shares the same belief that travelling to new places and experiencing new cultures and languages is imperative to the development and growth of young minds. Knowing that she plays a part in giving students the opportunity to experience the world with their favourite teachers makes it all worthwhile. 19 TRAVEL AND TOURISM Michelle Stone, MA (Mathematics) Youth Counsellor, Celebrity Cruise Lines Michelle Stone worked seasonally for Celebrity Cruise Lines as a youth staff counsellor for three years.
