Honors 9 Expository/Functional Text Research Assignment: Designing Your Own News Flyer Honoring Survivors Overview: For this assignment you will spend time researching 1 holocaust survivor and 1 survivor of your choice (they could have overcome another historical tragedy, a physical/mental obstacle, or adversity of some kind). After you spend time researching their tales of survival you will create a news flyer in their honor where you write 1 article highlighting the holocaust survivor, 1 article highlighting the survivor of your choice, and 1 article comparing and contrasting their stories (commentary). You will include visual aids in this news flyer including 1 relevant piece of functional text (a graph, timeline, chart of some kind that you CREATE helping to illustrate an aspect of one of your news articles). You will also need to incorporate relevant images (at least 2) as well as titles to spruce up your flyer! Here is a quick checklist of every element that should be present: News Flyer Requirements (please follow this order when putting together your flyers) 1. Three pieces of expository text: (Strand 3, Concept 2) 1.Holocaust Survivor Article: Once you’ve done solid research on your holocaust survivor’s story/life (birth, family background, experiences during the war, tale of survival, updated information of their recent years/occupation, other interesting tidbits, and any people associated…..) write an informative article, in your own words, that incorporates a portion of the information you have learned. Remember, you can't write about everything you've learned...you must evaluate what information is the MOST important regarding their tale of survival. The article should be approximately 200 words in length and give a clear explanation of your focus. 2. Survivor of your Choice Article: Once you’ve done solid research on a survivor of your choice (their birth, family background, unique life experiences, tale of survival, details of overcoming struggle, updated information of their recent years/occupation, other interesting tidbits, and any people associated…..) write an informative article, in your own words, that incorporates a portion of the information you have learned. Remember, you can't write about everything you've learned...you must evaluate what information is the MOST important regarding their tale of survival. The article should be approximately 200 words in length and give a clear explanation of your focus. 3. Article Comparing Survivors (commentary): Now that you have written a short article on each type of survivor (holocaust and survivor of your choice) you must write a brief article comparing and contrasting their stories of triumph. In this article you should comment on the similarities/differences in each trial these individuals faced, their personality traits (that may have contributed to their survival), and the impact their stories could have (or already have had) on future generations/the modern day world. This article should maintain the third person voice and must be 100-150 words in length. 2. One piece of functional text: (Strand 3, Concept 3) Consider any statistical info you learned in your research. Provide a graph, chart, diagram (or anything else that would fit “functional text”) to provide information in a visual format related to your ONE of your survivor’s stories (Examples: This could appear as a timeline of birth-death, important dates related to their experiences during the war, statistics of death rates in the form of a graph focusing on the camp your survivor spent time in, details about their family lineage). Example: Sales 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr 4th Qtr 3. At LEAST Two Graphics: Provide two or more graphics to enhance the expository and functional text. These should be appropriate to reinforce the information presented, as well as provide interest to the eye ( Examples: This could include photos of your holocaust survivor, the camp they were located to during the war, relevant images related to their unique tale of survival/ as well as images related to your survivor of choice). Examples: 4. Titles, headlines: Provide clear titles/headlines in an appropriate size/font to organize your almanac page. You should include the following titles in your Almanac Page: Holocaust Survivor _____________ Survivor (depending on your choice) Comparing Survivors Statistics/Facts/Dates (depending on what your piece of functional text represents) 5. Other Considerations: In order to make our flyers show some conformity, please use 12 point/ Times New Roman for all expository text. Provide a separate page that includes all internet page websites you referenced for information and graphics (sample below) Make sure your page is interesting, organized, accurate, and pleasing to the eye. Your flyer can be more than 1 page long if you need more space- do not let the word “flyer” make you feel limited- it can become more of a news “packet” if needed. BE CREATIVE- as long as the required elements are present, edited, and polished you will excel at this assignment. So….how do you get this done? What steps should you follow to make this project doable? 1st- research, research, research. Read lots of sites that contain information and settle on areas of focus for your expository text articles. Take notes…notes…notes. Remember, these articles must be written in your own words and will be submitted to turnitin.com . 2nd plan your functional text. Remember, you can’t just copy a chart or diagram that you saw during your research…you have to design your own based on information you learned. 3rd plan the layout of your page. Where will you place the articles…where will the functional text fit…..and then plan and place your graphics. Don’t forget to place all of your headlines and titles! 4th edit, edit, edit. Another set of eyes can help you remove all those silly little errors!
