William Allen was born in New York in 1800 and migrated to Jackson County,
VA, probably before his marriage. Rivers were roads in those days, and if you
compare road sizes, the Ohio was an interstate, with traffic from Virginia,
Pennsylvania and New York passing. There is a fair chance that William came
down on a river boat and stayed. He married Susannah Gandee. Susannah, a
daughter of Uriah Jr. and Mercy "Massie" (Hughes) Gandee, was born in VA in
1810. Her family were the earliest settlers at present day Gandeeville,
Roane County WV, arriving about 1824.
The William Allen family is listed in the 1850 Jackson County VA (WV)
census.

Hiram Allen, a son of William and Susannah Allen, was born in Jackson
County, VA (WV) in 1828. He married Rebecca Wingroves in Jackson County.
Nothing is known of this marriage. He married a widow, Rebecca Hudmirrah
(Flenner) Cunningham in Gilmer County WV April 7, 1870.
Rebecca, a daughter of George "Wash" and Sarah "Sally" Flenner, was born in
Randolph County VA (WV) about 1838. She married George W. Cunningham in Gilmer
County February 5, 1857. George was born in Pendleton County VA (WV) about 1833
and died in the Civil War battle of Winchester, VA July 24, 1864. He served the
Union in Co A 5th W.Va. Volunteer Infantry.
The 1870 Gilmer County VA census reports list four of Rebecca's children
by her previous marriage living with the Hiram Allen household.
Hiram and Rebecca are listed in the 1900 and 1910 census of Gilmer
County WV.
