2nd Grade Common Core Math Plans
2nd 9 weeks - 4th week
Monday, November 12 - Friday, November 16, 2012 The student will:
1) Review the Addition Strategy of the Week: Review Doubles + 1 and Doubles + 2 on Monday
(part of standard 2.OA.2).
2) Review adding with regrouping within 100 using pictorial strategies (drawings) - mostly a 1st
grade standard (part of standard 2.NBT.5).

Monday, November 12, 2012 Materials:
 Facts Practice TR144 Worksheet (Resource Box)
 Front End Addition Dice Roll Worksheet (Resource Box)
 Addition in the Air Worksheet (Resource Box)
In this lesson 1) Review the Addition Strategy of the Week: Review Doubles + 1 on Monday. The rest of the week
you will do a review of this strategy. You may want to spiral back and review some of the other
strategies (this would be a very quick review).

Assign Facts Practice TR144 Worksheet (Resource Box)
2) Review adding with regrouping within 100 using pictorial strategies (drawings) - mostly a 1st
grade standard. Teachers
- Focus on drawing base 10 blocks, ten frames,
or bean sticks.
Teaching Strategies:
1. T a l k a b o u t d r a w i n g a p i c t o r i a l m o d e l t o s o l v e 2 - d i g i t a d d i t i o n w i t h
regrouping. Focus on drawing base ten blocks, ten frames or bean sticks.
2. Teachers - it is important for students to identify the base ten blocks as
=
10 or
16
= 10
+
=1
25

30
+
11
= 41
3. Have students practice drawing several examples.
4. Assign Front End Addition Dice Roll Worksheet (Resource Box), but have students use a
pictorial strategy (drawing) to solve them. Get students to show their work - important. The
teacher can roll a die on the promethean board and just call out any number from 1-6 for
students to fill in if you do not have a class set of dice.
Summarizing Strategy: Journal – Ask: Explain how you would solve 36 + 27 using a picture.
Classwork/Homework: Have students complete Addition in the Air Worksheet (Resource Box).
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 Materials:
 Doubles Plus One Worksheet (Resource Box)
 Math Square Worksheet (Resource Box)
 Adding on a Number Line Worksheet (Resource Box)
In this lesson 1) Review the Addition Strategy of the Week: Review Doubles + 1 .

2. Teachers - It is important for students to master drawing number lines
or open number lines. If problems are small like 3 + 5, it is fine to draw a
number line starting at zero. However, if you have larger numbers, yo u do
not want to start your number line at 0. You want to draw an open number
line.
3 . G i v e s t u d e n t s t h e p r o b l e m 1 6 + 2 5 . Have students draw a number line and locate
the number 25 on a number line or meter stick. Then go up 10 and then 6 more. They should
land on 41.

4. Assign Math Square Worksheet (Resource Box) and have students draw number lines to
solve them. Teachers - assign a few of these squares at least.
Summarizing Strategy: Journal – Ask: Solve 36 + 15 on a number line.
Classwork/Homework: Assign Adding on a Number Line Worksheet (Resource Box)
Wednesday, November 14, 2012 Materials:
 Doubles Plus Two Worksheet (Resource Box)
 Practice Exercises Worksheet (Resource Box)
In this lesson 1) Review the Addition Strategy of the Week: Review Doubles + 1 and Doubles + 2.
 Assign Doubles Plus Two Worksheet (Resource Box)
2) Discover and be introduced to addition invented strategies when adding with regrouping
within 100. Look at notes on invented strategies for ideas.
Teaching Strategies:
1. S t u d e n t s h a v e b e e n u s i n g m a n i p u l a t i v e s a n d d r a w i n g s t o s o l v e a d d i n g
two 2-digit numbers with regrouping. Now they will discover or be
introduced to invented strategies.
2. Ask students how they would solve 16 + 27 without using a manipulative
o r a d r a w i n g . T e a c h e r s - s o m e s t u d e n t s m a y s o l v e i t t h e t ra d i t i o n a l w a y add the ones and then add the tens. It is very important to be open to
different ways (invented strategies).
3. Can students think of another way to solve this problem? If not, tell
them that you have a new way called Front End Addition.
Front End Addition - Add tens to tens, ones to ones and then combine. Left to right has 2
advantages: students read from left to right and working first with the largest units yields a
closer approximation earlier so you get a better estimation of your answer quickly.
16

10 + 20 = 30
6 + 7 = 13
4. Practice this method with several problems. Teachers - Remember to be open to other
invented strategies (see notes for more examples).
Summarizing Strategy: Journal - Solve 37 + 18 using the front end addition method.
Classwork/Homework: Assign Practice Exercises Worksheet (Resource Box)
Thursday, November 15, 2012 Materials:
 Doubles Challenge Worksheet (Resource Box)
 Adding 2-Digit Numbers Worksheet (Resource Box)
In this lesson 1) Review the Addition Strategy of the Week: Review Doubles + 1 and Doubles + 2.
 Assign Doubles Challenge Worksheet (Resource Box)
2) Review discovering and being introduced to addition invented strategies when adding with
regrouping within 100. Look at notes on invented strategies for ideas.
Teaching Strategies:

different ways (invented strategies).
2. Can students think of another way (beside the traditional and front end
addition) to solve this problem? If not, tell them that you have at least a
couple of new ways.
a) Add on tens and then add ones.
36 + 28
36 and 20 more is 56 and 8 more is 64.
b) Special Strategy: Counting on by tens (pictorially).

3.Have students practice some problems with the invented strategies. Let students pick their
strategy and talk about it.
4. Assign Adding 2-Digit Numbers Worksheet (Resource Box) using the front end addition
strategy (teachers - assign some of these problems for students to take home or finish in class).
Summarizing Strategy: Journal – Ask:
