Nanchang Sino-Canadian Academy Science 10 Unit 1 Project: Game On! Ms. Barnes Based on: Unit 3 project, page 264-265, Science 10, McGraw-Hill Ryerson Problem: How can you use a scavenger hunt game to teach physics concepts to other grade 10 students? Suggested Materials: Meter sticks Regular paper & graph paper Pen, pencil & eraser Ruler Compass Calculator Stopwatch Digital camera Procedure: Introduction 1. Each group must write an introduction to their game. 2. The introduction must include a clear and well-organized summary of the concepts discussed in this unit. 3. You must write using full sentences in paragraph form. Clues 1. In your groups you will create 10 clues that will lead players to an object hidden on school property. 2. Each clue should provide information to find the next hidden clue. 3. Each clue should require the players to take measurements, follow maps and/or do calculations in order to find the location of the next clue. 4. The clues must include each of the following measurements at least once: distance, displacement, speed, velocity and acceleration. Some measurements may be used in calculations to find other measurements. 5. The clues must make use of at least one graph and may include only the math used in this unit. Testing 1. Hide your group’s clues and object before you come to class. (Put the paper in plastic covers so that it will not get wet.) 2. Exchange your first clue with another group & play the other group’s game to find the hidden object. Use the stopwatch to record how long it takes you to find the hidden item. 3. Fill out the review form for the game that you played. 4. Play other group’s games if there is extra time. 5. Take the review and use it to decide if there are any ways to make your game better. Conclusion 1. 2. 3. 4. Write a short conclusion for your game. If you changed any clues based on another group’s review, tell what you changed. Explain how you included the motion measurements from this unit in your clues. Discuss some ideas (at least 2) for marketing (advertising) this as an educational game. (Why would a teacher want to buy your game?) Assessment 1. Pass in a well-written introduction. (14 points) 2. Pass in a copy of all 10 clues, including photographs of where each clue is hidden. (Do not pass in the same clues that were outside, make a nice copy to submit.) (20 points) 3. Pass in a conclusion for your game. (12 points) Total: /46 points Nanchang Sino-Canadian Academy Science 10 Ms. Barnes Due Dates: Games will be played on the following days: 10 A: Friday, November 7 10 B: Thursday, November 6 10 C: Tuesday, November 4 10 D: Tuesday, November 4 Final assignment due: 10 A: Tuesday, November 11 10 B: Wednesday, November 12 10 C: Monday, November 10 10 D: Monday, November 10 Writing Rubric – Introduction Category Physics concepts: Distance Physics concepts: Displacement Physics concepts: Speed Physics concepts: Velocity Physics concepts: Acceleration Spelling Full Sentences 2 points Distance was explained well Displacement was explained well Speed was explained well Velocity was explained well Acceleration was explained well No spelling mistakes Full sentences were used 1 point Distance was explained poorly 0 points Distance was not mentioned Displacement was explained poorly Speed was explained poorly Displacement was not mentioned Velocity was explained poorly Velocity was not mentioned Acceleration was explained poorly 1-5 spelling mistakes Full sentences were used sometimes Acceleration was not mentioned Speed was not mentioned 6 + spelling mistakes Full sentences were not used at all Game Marking: Each clue will be assessed individually for a maximum of 2 points per clue. Nanchang Sino-Canadian Academy Group #: _____________________ Science 10 Game Review Ms. Barnes Game # Reviewed: _______________ Class: _____________ Please fill out this Game Review honestly and completely. Measure your time for each clue from the moment that you read the clue to the moment that you find the next clue. Use the lap button on your stopwatch for each time interval. Each group should have at least 2 stopwatches, one for the overall time and one to complete any necessary time measurements when performing calculations. You will also need to carry a meter stick, notebook, pen/pencil, compass & calculator.
