Formerly a church building that is situated in the village of Ashington. The building has been completely refurbished throughout the property. The design provides open, light and airy rooms. The three main rooms – Twinkle Stars (babies from 3 months to approximately 24 months depending on their individual development and learning needs), Shooting stars (Toddlers – the 2-3 year olds) and the All Stars (preschool children aged 3 and 4) provide a homely, fun, exciting, happy and warm environment for your child. We are part of a portfolio of nurseries in rural locations and along the West Sussex coast. Our nurseries are A Step Ahead Children’s Nursery in Lower Beeding ‘Ofsted Outstanding’, Little Acorns in Southwater, West Chiltington Montessori ‘Ofsted Outstanding’, A Step Ahead Lancing and A Step Ahead Shoreham. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and fun loving staff team who enhance your child’s learning and development through use of exciting and creative activities. Our Ofsted inspections demonstrate many of our strengths and highlight the positive outcomes we achieve through the way we care for each and every child. We have a large outdoor area, with a variety of resources and equipment, which is surrounded by a secure 6ft fence. Children have either a dedicated age specific time in the garden which gives the opportunity for the children to engage in age appropriate activities. We also have times during the day when the entire nursery join together; this gives opportunity for siblings to play together. At lunch and tea time we serve a hot homemade meal prepared on site by our cook Jo. If your child has food intolerances or allergies we will arrange a 1:1 meeting with Jo and Suzanne the Nursery Manager to go into more detail and create a food plan for your child (see example menu - page 13). Children have a fruit and vegetable snack in the morning. We encourage the children to become independent, for example they may be asked to set their place setting at lunch, collecting a plate, bowl, and cutlery and named place mat, pour their own water with support if needed. This ensures that the children are not sitting around passively whilst we serve the lunch they are active and becoming independent. All this is supervised to ensure safety and hygiene is maintained at all times. We encourage a partnership relationship with parents and are very eager to share and extend experiences for the children from home into the nursery and vice versa. We welcome visits from prospective parents and their children. We are also keen to start parent forum to provide social events, where staff and parents/families/friends can get together informally, for example BBQs, quiz’s, sport’s day. Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 Aims and Objectives To provide a safe, happy environment with the appropriate adult to child ratio in accordance to national legislation and best practice guidance. For children to reach their full potential through activities with meaning and purpose encouraging individuality. To encourage parental/carer involvement by keeping them informed in their child’s progress, group plan and activities. To enhance the children’s confidence and self-esteem by praise and encouragement. To plan and provide a wide range of equipment and activities with appropriate adult interaction where the children can succeed. To follow child led play but to link this with a semi-structured term plan creating progression in the children’s learning abilities, linking their skills and understanding. To provide a well balanced curriculum, this will encourage the children to use their ideas and imagination to further their understanding of the world. To encourage the staff to update and further their training to ensure quality care for the children. To provide a childcare centre in which children are treated and respected equally regardless of gender, race, disability, faith or religion. All staff also has annual appraisals with quarterly supervision meetings and a training plan to ensure we offer the best care possible for all our children using the latest resources and techniques. A key person who works with your child Our key person system gives each member of staff responsibility for just a few children. Each child in the group has one special adult to relate to, which can make settling into the group much easier. The key person maintains links with your child’s home setting, working with you the parent/carer through shared record keeping to ensure that all children are supported in reaching their full potential. Your child’s learning journal is shared with you at parents/carers update meetings but is available for you to see at any time. All progress against the Early Years Foundation Stage programme is recorded in the journal alongside the next steps identified to support ongoing progress. The journals are sent to your child’s school to support their transition as they enter Reception. We are always happy to speak to you about your child’s progress. This can be arranged within session times, in a formal parents/carers evening meeting, or before/after sessions whichever is more convenient for you. Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 Learning A monthly topic is used to plan activities around the areas of learning; this is usually derived from children’s interest. This plan is usually displayed on the Parents Information Boards at the entrance to the nursery. The plan ensures we have the right resources in place to support learning and development but we are flexible in our approach so that the learning is ‘child led’ where possible. Your child’s previous knowledge will be used to tailor activities to their ability and their progress reviewed regularly. Each day we take care to provide activities, where we use equipment appropriate to the age and stage development of the children, to stimulate their interests, encourage investigation skills and enable children to practise existing skills, to extend and acquire new skills. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) programme which ensures that your child’s learning and development is fully supported and encourages them to reach their potential. We develop activities and experiences, and extend opportunities which the children themselves have identified which ensure we are constantly supporting the learning and development of the children on an individual level. Through these adult and child led experiences we can also make sure that all the themes are being addressed and that your child is achieving to their potential. There are four overarching principles: A Unique Child Positive Relationships Enabling Environments Children’s Development and Learning The prime areas of Learning and Development are: Communication and language; Physical development; Personal Social and Emotional development Four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the world; Expressive arts and design Prime Areas 1. Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 2. Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food. 3. Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities. Specific Areas 4. Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest. 5. Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. 6. Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. 7. Expressive arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology. Would you like to know more about the Early Years Foundation Stage? Further information regarding our curriculum and the Foundation Stage is available in the Nursery entrance on display or within the Curriculum Policy. Our Early Years Lead (Antonia) would be happy to talk you through the Early Years Foundation Stage programme and our innovative implementation tools which mean your child learns through fun and play. We work to identify the strengths and challenges for every child on an individual level which means we (the key person in partnership with you) can then build a learning plan for every child to ensure that they can achieve to their potential. Healthy Eating and Drinking Here at Ashington Children’s Nursery we believe that if good eating habits are instilled at an early age, they would become habits of a lifetime. Our aim is to promote healthy eating and drinking and a healthy lifestyle, to enjoy healthy foods and talk about healthy experiences. Therefore the staff at the nursery will endeavour to provide a healthy nutritional balanced diet for all children who attend. Water is available for children to drink in the rooms throughout the day. The daily menu is displayed for your information just inside the nursery on our parent information boards and on our website. Lunch is served between 11.50 and 12.00 noon, tea is served at 4.00 pm and both are included within the fees. Meals are a whole nursery event. We aim to introduce children to new foods and at the same time promote healthy eating as part of your child’s development. We also provide vegetarian meals and cater for particular dietary needs. The menu is offered to all children – including babies once weaned. Alternative dishes and fresh fruit are always available. Breakfast is available for children that arrive from 7.30-8.30am with cereal or toast being provided. Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 Snack time Each day your child is offered a healthy snack and a drink or either water or milk. This is a time when children learn important social skills, such as sharing, good manners and building relationships with their peers, asking their friends to pass bowls, cups etc. This helps in building their confidence and strengthens their independence. In the baby room snack time is more flexible and aims to meet the needs of the children present. The under 2’s will be offered soft fruit, rice cakes or breadsticks and fresh water and or milk Children with Allergies and Intolerances If your child has a food allergy or intolerance we will arrange a 1:1 meeting with the manager and cook to ensure we totally understand the needs of your child. If your child has complex food allergies we will request your Health Visitor or GP signs the Health Care Plan as acknowledgment of additional requirements. A sample general lunch/tea menu is: Monday Lunch Roast chicken & gravy with seasonal vegetables & roast potatoes Fresh fruit salad Tea Macaroni Cheese Peaches & Cream Tuesday Lunch Shepherd’s Pie & peas Homemade Rice Pudding Tea Jacket Potato with cheese or beans Fruit Jelly Wednesday Lunch Toad in the Hole with seasonal vegetables Banana Custard Tea Homemade soup & Roll Blackcurrant Milk Jelly Thursday Lunch Macaroni Cheese, sweet corn & garlic bread Fruit jelly & Ice Cream Tea Chicken chow mien Banana Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 Friday Lunch Sweet & sour Chicken with Rice Apple Crumble Tea Pitta bread selection and vegetable sticks Yogurt We work with parents around allergies and intolerances and are happy to keep a food diary for your child whilst at nursery for you to review and compare to any reactions noted. Absence In order to fulfil our legal requirements, if you know that your child will be absent from a session (e.g. doctors appointment, a family holiday, etc) you must inform us in writing prior to the event. In the case of illness a telephone call in the morning on 01903 892643 will be adequate. Full fees are required during absence. Holidays The Nursery is open for 52 weeks of the year; we close on bank holidays and no charges apply. No discount is provided for holiday periods, therefore full fees are required. Health and Hygiene Parents are asked to keep their children at home if they have any infection and to inform the nursery as to the nature of the infection. This will allow the staff to alert other parents as necessary (e.g. chickenpox) and to make careful observations of any child who seems unwell. Parents are asked not to bring in a child that has been vomiting for at least 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting and only once your child is eating and drinking normally. If a child has had diarrhoea we ask that there is 48 hours from the last bout of diarrhoea before your child returns to Nursery. In the event of your child becoming ill, a member of staff will contact you or the emergency contact person and your child should be collected as soon as possible. Further information is attached in the registration forms at the end of the parent’s guide and in the Policy and Procedure file in the Nursery reception area or can be emailed on request. We follow the Public Health England guidelines for early year’s settings and this can be viewed via the following link: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/353953 /Guidance_on_infection_control_in_schools_11_Sept.pdf Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 You will need to provide the following for your child: A spare set of clothes in a bag (including underwear). All items should be clearly labelled. A suitable outdoor coat and Wellington boots both named. Soft shoes or slippers for indoors, again both named. Sun hat and long sleeved clothing – clearly named (during the nicer weather). If your child has a comforter please feel free to bring this to nursery. We try to discourage children bringing in toys but encourage links for show and tell (e.g. umbrella for weather activity or postcards/photos for holiday themed activity). The nursery will provide the following: Sleep/rest mats, clean sheets and blankets Lots of loving care and attention Aprons Snack at 10am, a hot nutritious lunch (incorporated within the 8am – 1pm session) tea at 4pm (incorporated within the 1pm – 6pm session). Nappies and wipes if required. What to wear Learning and playing can sometimes be messy! Although we provide aprons we advise you to dress your child in clothes that are easily washable. We also encourage independence; therefore simple clothing, which they can handle themselves, will enable them to use the toilet without being dependant on others. Dungarees might look attractive but can cause delays in getting to the toilet on time! It is useful if you can provide your child with a bag of spare clothes (pair of socks, pants, trousers and t-shirt) just in case of an accident as it is quite normal for a young child to become so absorbed in an activity that they forget to visit the toilet. All items of clothing, including shoes, should be clearly labelled with your child’s name to avoid any mix-ups and anxiety. For safety reasons we request that no jewellery should be worn in pre-school. For pierced ears small studs or sleepers are acceptable if necessary, however parents must take full responsibility for loss or damage. Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 Settling into the Nursery We want your child to feel safe and happy in our nursery. A child that is anxious or unhappy will not fulfil their potential. Our settling procedures aim to help parents and children feel comfortable and to ensure that they can benefit from what we have to offer with confidence. You and your child are invited to come and have a look around the nursery prior to starting. This is an opportunity to meet staff and see what we do. Any special needs or requirements can be discussed. Our Equal Opportunities Policy and Inclusion Policy go into more detail and a copy is available from any member of staff at your request. It is not uncommon for a young child to be upset when starting at a nursery. To minimise any distress we can be as flexible as your child needs whilst settling into a new routine. We support parents staying with their child to settle them before leaving on the first couple of visits to the nursery, gradually building up to longer absences depending on the child. Welcome Policy Parents/children are asked to ring the bell as they arrive for the morning session the babies and toddlers go in the front of the building and pre-schoolers in the side gate, the side gate is open in the morning from 8am to 9am. The gate will then be locked from the inside for the morning and reopened at 12.45pm for lunchtime collection and again at 5.00pm. A staff member will open the door to greet you and your child and the children are encouraged where appropriate to find their coat peg in the child’s classroom, hang up their coat and bag and self register. Staff members settle in the children by encouraging them to join in activities or to wave to their parents or greet new arrivals. Parents are asked to sign their child in and out on the register with the time of arrival and departure and a member of staff takes any information necessary from the parent (for example if there is a change to who will be collecting their child). Settling in Policy At Ashington Children’s Nursery we want children to feel safe, stimulated and happy within the setting and to feel secure and comfortable with the staff. We also want parents to have confidence in both their children’s well being and their role as active partners with Ashington Children’s Nursery. We aim to make the setting a welcoming place where children settle quickly and easily because consideration has been given to the individual needs and circumstances of children and their families. Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 These are some of the ways we support you and your child when joining the Nursery: Before the child starts to attend the setting, we use a variety of ways to provide his/her parents with information. These include a Registration Pack (including our prospectus and policies) an initial visit by the parent/carer to have a look around, information about activities carried out within the setting, along with our room routines. We also hold information evenings and individual meetings with parents. Whenever possible before the child is due to start Ashington Children’s Nursery we provide opportunities for the children and parents to visit the setting. We allocate a key person to each child and his/her family before she/he starts to attend; where possible the key person welcomes and looks after the child and his/her parents at the child’s first session and during the settling in process. We use warm-up sessions for the child to attend with his/her parents to start off with, gradually reducing the parent’s attendance once the child has settled. We will also use this time to go through the registration documents to clarify everything with parents and create a file for the particular child. When a child starts to attend we explain the process of settling in with his/her parents and jointly decide on the best way to help the child settle into the setting. We have an expectation that the parents, carer or close relative, will stay with the child for the first warm-up session, gradually taking time away from the child, increasing this as the child becomes more confident. We judge a child to be settled when they have formed a relationship with their key person; for example the child looks for the key person when he\she arrives, goes to them for comfort, and seems pleased to be with them. The child is also familiar with where things are and is pleased to see other children and participate in activities. When parents leave we encourage them to say good-bye to their child and explain that they will be coming back, and when. We recognise that some children will settle more easily than others but that some children are not ready to be left, so we request that their parent stays for at least the first warm-up session. Farewell Policy We usually use ‘story time’ to create an environment where parents can pick their children and discuss their day with the child and/or staff. Parents/carers are encouraged to come right into the room to collect their child. Parents/carers are asked to sign children out on the register and staffs are available to chat to parents about their day passing on any relevant information or messages, under 2’s have daily feedback sheets. Parents are then responsible for collecting coats and Updated 24/08/15 Company Number: 04476246 any pictures/letters to go home, from their child’s drawer situated outside the child’s classroom. Any parents who are more than 5 minutes late collecting their child maybe be charged a £10 late collection fee for each 10 minutes (or part of each 10 minutes thereafter) as the nursery is staffed according to children’s session times and additional staff will need to be kept back to care for your child. The nursery is registered to provide childcare from 7.30am until 6pm and therefore all children should arrive from 8am onwards unless early bird sessions are booked and leave the site by 6pm. Should you wish to have a more detailed handover about your child’s day and are collecting at the end of the day, please allow time to speak to staff before the nursery closes at 6pm. We appreciate that unforeseen things happen and ask that if you are going to be late please ring to let us know as we will need to arrange for additional staff cover. Registration Form and Consent Forms Initially if you wish to apply for a place in the nursery we request that you complete the following registration form and return it to us. We ask you to provide at least one contact number other than the main carers’ home mobile number in the case of emergencies. If your child becomes ill during a session and needs to leave before then end it will reduce distress if we can assure them that we have contacted a relative or friend. Please notify a member of staff promptly if there are any changes of address or telephone numbers. In addition there are other forms that are required to be completed depending on circumstances. These include the following: Emergency Treatment Form This form needs to be completed for every child even if you do not wish for emergency treatment to be given to your child. In this instance you should notify on the form what your wishes are. Collection Arrangements Notification It is important that we are informed of anyone else, besides named parents/guardians, who are authorised to collect your child. Children will only be released into the care of authorised adults. If you are interested in a password scheme, please indicate on this form. Feedback If having read this information you any questions – please do ask them! We welcome visits, and we welcome questions and comments. We want to be the best nursery in West Sussex so all suggestions/thoughts/ideas are always welcomed in person, by email or anyway you choose to convey them.
