QATAR AIRWAYS INTRODUCES INNOVATIVE MOBILE TECHNOLOGY FOR PILOTS Qatar Airways has begun the rollout of QLOUD, an internally developed mobility application for iPads, which will provide real time and decision-relevant information to the airline’s pilots. Over 500 pilots have already embraced the new technology with 500 more set to begin using QLOUD over the next few weeks. All 2,500 Qatar Airways pilots are expected to be using the QLOUD system by September this year. Qatar Airways has been innovatively using mobility technology in its various business functions for over three years, ensuring that its workforce, whether on the ground or in air, are able to retrieve decision-relevant information in real time, and in turn improve operational efficiency and enhance customer service. QLOUD allows pilots to check-in for duty and retrieve important pre-flight information, such as their schedules, flight plans, maps, weather information, details of the crew they are flying with, hotel and destination information and dispatch briefs. This information is accessed at a time and place of their convenience ahead of the flight departure. QLOUD also provides Qatar Airways pilots with easy access to operational documentation. Hard copies of flight operational manuals and regulatory documentation, which can easily run into thousands of pages, will become obsolete as soft copies will be made available on the iPads. Updates to these documents will be completed automatically by distributing relevant operational manuals and updates to all the pilots through QLOUD programming, which includes acknowledgment of receipt from the pilot. In addition, all the paper-based forms, which were being filled out manually by pilots, have been replaced with electronic forms as part of QLOUD. QLOUD also aids pilots in scheduling their training, keeping track of their certification and fully supports eLearning. The platform provides easy access to all corporate applications required by pilots, including their email, providing everything needed by the flight crew community on a single device wherever and whenever they need it. With Aviation Authorities approving iPads for use in the aircraft deck, Qatar Airways intends to enhance QLOUD to supplement and support on-board Electronic Flight Bag technology. KAA NEWS Kenya Airports Authority constructs offices for KAPU and donates four vehicles. APA presents final KSh1.4B compensation for JKIA fire KAA’s claim for the August 2013 fire now fully settled APA Insurance presented Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) with a KSh1.4 billion compensation cheque, fully setting the claim from the August 7, 2013 fire at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). This brings the total compensation for the inferno by the insurer, which gutted the international arrivals terminal at JKIA, to KSh1.97 billion. In December 2013, APA presented to KAA an interim KSh500 million payout to facilitate the reconstruction of the new arrivals terminal at JKIA, East and Central Africa’s busiest airport. The presentation of the final compensation cheque follows receipt of full documentation from the loss adjusters using independent data from specialist forensic experts, engineers and quantity surveyors to evaluate the claim. Investigations into the cause of the fire concluded it was due to an electrical fault. Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony at the KAA headquarters, APA Insurance Chairman, Dr. John Simba thanked the APA team for their swift work on processing the claim of unusual complexity. Dr Simba said: “The fire at JKIA – the region’s critical airport hub – caused shockwaves around the world. We understood from the start that this would be a large and complicated claim and one we would need to act upon with all necessary speed. We are proud to have settled it with expediency and conclusively, working closely with our partners at KAA”. Receiving the cheque, KAA Managing Director, Lucy Mbugua said that full settlement of the claim by APA Insurance was a great boost to the recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the facilities at JKIA. “The full settlement of our claim for the fire at JKIA will enable us to restore the facilities at the airport, which together with the ongoing expansion and modernization works, will stamp the position of the airport as the main gateway into the region,” Ms Mbugua added. Already, KAA has invited bids for a contractor to bring down the damaged international arrival terminal to pave way for its reconstruction, alongside the redesign for terminals 1, 2 and 3. The authority is also in the process of shipping an interim terminal, besides finalizing work on Terminal 4. Construction of the Greenfield terminal, with a handling capacity for 20 million passengers has also kicked off. APA Insurance through the support of its reinsurers: Swiss Re, Africa Re, Kenya Re, Zep Re and East Africa Re, consolidated the total amount to settle the loss. Given the broad reinsurance programme, APA’s balance sheet will remain strong despite the payment as it seeks to set a precedent in determining major losses experienced by our clients.
