What is the difference between a presence detector and
a motion detector?
The main difference between presence detectors and
motion detectors lies in their
• Detection properties
• Areas of use
• Possible settings and connections
5
Motion detectors
Motion detectors detect walking movements within the set detection zone.
Basic principle:
Preset light value below threshold + movement registered
No movement registered + set stay-ON time expired
= Light ON
= Light OFF
Ideal areas of use: outdoor areas and rooms with a high level of movement
6
Presence detectors
Presence detectors respond to the slightest movements
using extremely high-resolution, precision sensor technology.
Basic principle:
Presence + light level is below a certain threshold
No presence detected + set stay-ON time expired
or
Adequate ambient brightness (despite presence)
= Light ON
= Light OFF
= Light OFF
Ideal areas of use: indoor areas, especially for seated activities
(offices in which people work at desks, classrooms etc.) and other special areas,
such as sports halls, changing rooms, corridors or storage areas.

Motion Detectors
Presence Detectors
Detection Walking movements
Even the slightest movement, also seated activities
Application Indoors and outdoors
Indoors
Indoors: garages, corridors, storerooms
Offices, classrooms, conference rooms etc.
Outdoors: driveways, entrances, car parks, carports, fronts of
buildings
High rooms: warehouses, sports halls etc.
Additional control of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning or
constant lighting control
Motion detectors provide convenience, safety and security
Presence detectors provide max. energy efficiency and
convenience

DALI, KNX
Light 'ON' Movement after ambient light has fallen below threshold
criterion
Light channel: movement/presence when ambient light is below
a set threshold
HVAC channel: movement/presence
Light 'OFF' Load/artificial light remains ON as long as movement is detected,
criterion/light
measurement light measurement remains deactivated during this time.
Light 'OFF' if ambient light is sufficient despite detection of
presence/movement
Light measurement remains activated
HVAC channel and light OFF, when stay-ON time has expired
after the last movement
Period light stays 'ON' for starts after last detected movement,
load/artificial light then switches off
Other
More setting capabilities for matching sensor to control task
Considerably more precise detection
Different options depending on the type of room
8
Presence must be detected precisely and reliably even when people move
only minimally during their seated activities.
9
Extremely high-resolution sensor systems detect the slightest
movements.
Steinel Presence Control PRO IR QUATTRO HD
Good presence detector with 3 pyro sensors
1300 switching zones
4800 switching zones
10
Presence range
at a mounting height of
2.8 m
Presence detectors must cover the entire room without overlapping and without gaps.
11
Advantages of a mechanically scalable square detection zone
Ideal for Open Plan Office Areas
• Zones can be clearly planned
• Detection without overlapping and without gaps
• Detection reliably planned for every point in the room
• No detection in passageways
• Presence zone is the last to be limited
12
Intelligent functions and settings for adapting to individual needs
Time setting for light
• Pulse mode
• Actuation of a staircase lighting time switch
• 2 seconds ON, 8 seconds OFF
• IQ mode
• Self-learning stay-ON time
• Optimally adapted to the room and use
Switch-on delay for HVAC with Potential Free Output
• Room surveillance
• HVAC switching contact is only switched when the room is actually being used
• Actuator is not tripped by someone briefly looking into the room
13
Special function: basic brightness and constant-lighting control
• Basic brightness
• 10% dimming when brightness drops below threshold and movement is not detected
• For 30 seconds – 30 minutes after expiry of the last detected movement
• Or when brightness value remains permanently below threshold
• Constant lighting control
• Constant level of brightness within a room
• Artificial light is added proportionally to the measured daylight
• Amount of added artificial light depends on the incident daylight
Manual override via push-button, switch or remote control
• Manual intervention must be possible during presentations, video shows
• External button/switch connected via separate "S" terminal
Additional ON – ON/OFF function with manual override
• ON only allows the light to be switched ON manually, but not OFF
• ON/OFF allows the light to be switched ON and OFF manually
14
Semi-automatic and all-automatic
• Semi-automatic (the light is switched off by the sensor)
• Manual ON, automatic OFF
• Via external button or switch
• Manual OFF possible at any time
• All-automatic (the light is controlled entirely by the sensor)
• Automatic ON, automatic OFF
• Manual ON and OFF override possible at any time
Normal mode/Test mode
• Normal mode
• Presence detector operates with the values set on the potentiometers,
DIP switches and the remote control
• Test mode
• Test correct operation, as well as setting and pacing out the detection zone
• ON for 8 seconds when presence is detected
• Test mode can also be activated via flashing blue LED without switched load
when presence is detected
