12. Life, Death & Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the central in God’s Plan of Salvation.
The Old Testament has only one text suggesting that Messiah will be divine – Isaiah 9:6.
The Incarnation of God was not anticipated. Messiah was expected to be son of David.
It took 300 years for the Christian church to fully accept and affirm faith in Divine Savior.
Resurrection gave conviction that God was in Jesus’ story, that Divinity was Present.
The story of God and story of humanity converging together in one person. The Mystery!
I. What if Jesus had never been? Unique contributions of Christ’s Influence
a. Jesus transformed everything that he touched.
b. The whole world counts time “Before & After”
c. Prior to Christ human life was considered cheap. Christ made each individual invaluable.
d. Ancient societies sacrificed children and valued them nothing until the age of maturity.
Abortion, infanticide, abandonment was applauded, and common. Child-killing was
common, except Christians. Christ raised a child as a standard of the Kingdom, in the early
church cultural practices disappeared. A newborn child was recognized to bear the Image of
God. Each life became Treasure. Justinian Code, 6th century Christian Law, offered
protection to all children, and punishment to any who would expose or endanger a child.
e. Ancients and recent non-Christian cultures did not value women, killing baby-girls
affected marriage customs of engaging at an early age. Christ elevated women to the
equality with men, In Christ there is no difference in status between gender.
f. Elderly care was never considered reasonable before Christ.
g. Christ’s influence gave reason to abolish slavery, giving dignity to work.
h. Christ’s influence led to abolishment of gladiators, cannibalism, suicide, placing sanctity
above the quality of life.
i. Antiquity left no trace of organized charity. Hospitality was more a mutual convenience.
j. Hospitals began during the Middle Ages by Christian efforts
k. Universities began for Christian purposes of balanced development
l. Literacy and education for masses
m. New work-ethic – seeing dignity in the physical work, and striving for the best, to glorify
God even in our work.
n. Sanctity of marital relationships.
o. Civilizing the world with Judeo-Christian value system.
p. Concept of Grace.

II. Prophetic Predictions
a. From 365 prophecies fulfilled in Jesus, 109 are such that ONLY Jesus could have fulfilled. Being
specific, without dual application, but pointing out to his unique life and ministry.
b. Daniel’s prophecy about 70 weeks predicts the date of Christ’s Ministry & Death for many –
from 457 B.C. to 27 A.D. 483 years. The Cross took place in the spring of 31 A.D. “mid-week”
c. 457 B.C. date is based on Ezra 7:7-8 command that culminated 3 decrees (Ezra 6:14).
d. This “time-specific” prophecy is important as it is a part of much longer prophecy of 2300 days
of which 70 weeks are “cut-off” for Jewish people, (Daniel 8) pointing out to 1844.
e. 7 prophetic years are suggested as a curse for sin based on Leviticus 26:24, 18-24

III. Pagan similarities
a. "The devil, whose business is to pervert the truth, mimics the exact circumstances of the Divine
Sacraments in the mysteries of idols. He himself baptizes some, that is to say, his believers and
followers; he promises forgiveness of sins in the sacred fount. Thus he celebrates the oblation of
bread, and brings in the symbol of the resurrection. Let us therefore acknowledge the craftiness
of the devil, who copies certain things of those that be Divine." Tertullian, late 2nd century CE,
commenting on the many similarities between Mithraism and Christianity.
b. 153 A.D. Justin Martyr in the First Apology (p.21-22) told his pagan readers that the virgin birth
of Jesus Christ ought not to seem incredible to them, since it was similar to pagan teachings. He
asks “Why did these virgin-born Gods precede Jesus? The devils ... craftily feigned …”
c. Kersey Graves’ book “The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors.” More books have come out
linking Christian faith to pagan myths. Listing 35+ pagan deities, over 20 virgin births, 16
crusifixions.
d. Thomas Paine, Deist, Abolitionist, An Essay on the Origin of Free-Masonry (1803-1805), wrote
about the Bible being allegorical myth describing astrology: “The Christian religion is a parody
on the worship of the sun, in which they put a man called Christ in the place of the sun, and pay
him the adoration originally paid to the sun”
e. Critics allegations  “broadly speaking”
1. 3000 B.C. Egyptian Horus was born to a virgin Isis-Meri, on December 25 in a cave or a manger. Isis, the
goddess of motherhood and fertility, was called 'Mother of Heaven', 'Regina Coeli' (Queen of Heaven) and 'Stella
Maris', as is Mary, the mother of Jesus, even today in the Roman Catholic Church: "Graeco-Roman culture was
particularly enamoured of [Isis] and called her the Stella Maris (star of the sea), represented in the heavens by the
north star ... [Mary's] portraits with the Christ often bear a striking similarity to those of Isis with Horus." Horus the
sky god and his once-and-future Father, Osiris, are frequently interchangeable . Horus is claimed to have said: 'I
and my Father are one'. At 12, Horus taught in the temple and was baptised in the Eridanus or Iarutana by 'Anup
the Baptiser', who was decapitated. This occurred when he was 30 years old, having disappeared for 18 years. As
an adult, Horus performed numerous miracles including walking on water. He had 12 disciples, two of who were
his 'witnesses” and were named “Anup' and 'Aan’. Horus was supposed to have raised El-Azar-us from the dead.
Before his death, Horus had 12 disciples and at one stage appeared before them, 'transfigured on the Mount'. He
came to fulfil the Law. Horus was supposed to reign one thousand years. Horus was called: Resurrected One; 'the
Way, the Truth and the Light'; 'Messiah'; 'Son of Man'; 'Son of God'; 'the Word'; 'the Word made Flesh'; 'Holy Child';
'God’s Anointed Son'; 'Word of Truth'. Horus was called the 'KRST', or the 'Anointed One'. Horus also was called
the Fisher; Good Shepherd; Lamb of God, and was associated with the lion, the lamb and the fish ('Ichthys'). Osiris
was called Lord of Lords, King of Kings, God of Gods; the Good Shepherd; the Resurrection and the Life; Eternity
and Everlastingness; the god who “made men and women to be born again". Horus was crucified on 'an accursed
tree' in sin-atonement, between two thieves. After suffering death, Horus was buried in a tomb where he was
resurrected and ascended into 'Amen-ti'. ancient Egyptians were assimilated through baptism with their god, Horus.
2. 2000 B.C. Babylonian Tammuz was born to a virgin, named Mylitta, on December 25. Tammuz suffered a painful
death in order to become mankind's saviour. On the third day, Tammuz was resurrected into a new life of eternal
blessedness.
3. 1700 B.C. Persian Zarathustra was born to a 15-year-old virgin, Dughdhava the milk maid, in a cave. He received
his prophetic calling at about 30 years of age. Name Zoroaster means 'seed of the woman' and his constant
emblem was a branch. He is constantly pictured on the ancient monuments as a child in his mother's arm, both
wearing a circle around their heads, the hieroglyphic representation of the sun and also the 'Seed of the woman'.
He was baptized in a river. He went into the wilderness where he was tempted by the evil one. He cast out
demons. He restored the sight of a blind man. His name was Word made Flesh; Logos. Ristakhiz, the resurrection
of the dead will take place. The world will be purged by molten metal. The Final Judgement of all souls will
commence. The World will be made perfect once again, as it was before the onslaught of the evil one.
4. 1400 -900 B.C. Indian Krishna. Krishna was born in a cave, which at the time of his birth was miraculously
illuminated. Devaki, the radiant Virgin of the Hindu mythology, bore Krishna to the god Vishnu (second god of the
Trimurthi (also called the Hindu Trinity). Krishna was born while his foster-father Nanda was in the city to pay his tax
to the king. His birth was heralded by a star. The cowherds adored his birth. Celestial beings sang hymns at the
birth. The baby Krishna began speaking to his mother shortly after birth. Angels issued a warning that the local

dictator, King Kansa, planned to kill the baby and had issued a decree for his assassination. Krishna's parents fled
and stayed in Mathura. King Kansa ordered the massacre of all male children born during the same night. Krishna's
birth was attended by angels and shepherds. The infant Krishna also was presented with gold, frankincense and
myrrh by wise men. Krishna's mission was to give directions to 'the kingdom of God' (Bhagavad Gita 2: 72).
Krishna travelled widely, performing miracles – raising the dead, healing lepers, the deaf and the blind. He cast out
indwelling demons. One of the first miracles he performed was to make a leper whole. He lived in poverty and loved
the poor. Krishna was baptised in the Ganges River. Krishna withdrew to the wilderness to fast. Eyewitnesses
claimed Krishna was transfigured in front of his disciples; hence his disciples bestowed upon him the title jezeus,
meaning "pure essence". He proclaimed he was the "Way to the Father". He selected disciples to spread his
teachings. He was meek, and merciful. He was criticized for associating with sinners. He humbled himself by
washing the feet of others. He was depicted on a cross with nail-holes in his feet, as well as having a heart emblem
on his clothing. He may also be depicted as having his foot on the head of a serpent. He forgave his enemies. He
celebrated a last supper. He descended into Hell, and was resurrected. Many people witnessed his ascension into
heaven. His names: Shepherd God; Sin Bearer; Liberator; Firstborn; Universal Word; Beginning and the End (Alpha
and Omega); Lion of the Tribe of Saki; identified as 'the seed of the woman bruising the serpent's head'. Krishna is
the second person of the Hindu Trinity: (1) Brahma, (2) Vishnu, (3) Siva. Krishna is the incarnation of Vishnu. At
about age 30, Krishna was "suspended to the branches of a tree by his murderer, that it might become the prey of
the vultures. Krishna is pictured on the cross with arms extended. Pierced by an arrow while hanging on the cross,
Krishna died, but descended into Hell from which he rose again on the third day and ascended into Heaven. The
skies and earth turned dark at noon on Krishna's death. Krishna is the second person of the Hindu trinity. Krishna
was 'without sin'. Considered both human and divine; omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. Hindu and
Catholic priesthoods have much in common. Both have nunneries and monasteries; both believe celibacy is a
virtue; both impose penances; both offer indulgences; and both use beads. Krishna will return on the last day on a
white horse to judge the living and the dead. Krishna claimed: "I am the Resurrection". He referred to himself as
having existed before his birth on earth. Krishna taught a future reward in heaven or punishment in Hell; a day of
judgment; a general resurrection; the need for repentance for sin; salvation requires faith in the Saviour; belief in
angels and of evil spirits; belief that disease and sickness is caused by evil spirits; a past war in heaven between
good and bad angels; free will, water immersion in water by Hindus is an important ritual of being born again
5. 1400 Phrygian-Anatolian Attis, later copied in 200 B.C. as Greek/Roman Dionysus/Bacchus, born of the virgin
Semele; his father was the supreme god Zeus. Some sources say he was placed in a manger and reared in a cave (
Zeus was also reared in a cave). Dionysus was sometimes identified with the lamb; King of Kings; Only Begotten
Son; Saviour; Redeemer; Sin Bearer; Anointed One; Alpha and Omega.
6. 600 B.C. Persian Mithras. Every year in Rome, in the middle of winter, the Son of God was born once more, putting
an end to darkness. Every year at first minute of December 25th the temple of Mithras was lit with candles, priests in
in white garments celebrated the birth of the Son of God and boys burned incense. Mithras was born in a cave, on
December 25th, of a virgin mother. God, in the form of light, entered a virgin, Anahita. Mithras was believed to shut
himself up in a cave from which he emerged once a year, born anew. With twelve disciples, Mithras travelled far
and wide as a teacher and illuminator of men. At about age 30 he began his ministry, offering salvation based on
faith, compassion, knowledge. He had 12 companions or disciples. He remained celibate throughout his life, and
valued self-control, renunciation and resistance to sensuality among his worshippers. Mithras was known as:
Saviour; Son of God; Redeemer; Lamb of God; the Way, the Truth and the Light; Messiah; Light of the World. He
also was called the Good Shepherd and was identified with both the lion and the lamb. Mithras was buried in a tomb
from which he rose again from the dead – an event celebrated yearly (spring equinox) with much rejoicing.
After the earthly mission had been accomplished, he took part in a Last Supper with his companions before
ascending to heaven, to forever protect the faithful from above. His celebrations at the spring and autumn
equinoxes were associated with crucifixion on a tree. These were the Persian New Year festivities described in the
book of Esther, and involved the crucifixion of the old years, considered wicked, so that a new and uncorrupted year
could take its place. This was seen as an annual rehearsal of the end when the wicked world is finally replaced by
the purity of the original creation. Mithras was one part of a holy trinity. The worshippers of Mithras held strong
beliefs in a celestial heaven and an infernal hell. They believed that the benevolent powers of the god would
sympathize with their suffering and grant them the final justice of immortality and eternal salvation in the world to
come. They looked forward to a final day of Judgment in which the dead would resurrect, and to a final conflict that
would destroy the existing order of all things to bring about the triumph of light over darkness. The followers of
Mithras kept the Sabbath holy, eating sacramental meals in remembrance of Him. The sacred meal of bread and
water, or bread and wine, was symbolic of the body and blood. Bread in wafers, or small loaves marked with a
cross, was used to symbolise flesh.
7. 500 B.C. Indian Buddha. Born of the Virgin Maya (“the Queen of Heaven”) on December 25th, announced by a star
and attended by wise men presenting costly gifts. At his birth Brahma angels sang hymns. An aged holy woman

beseeched the heavens to bless the child. Buddha taught in temple at age 12 and was able to match the wise
religious scholars in their understanding. He was tempted by Mara, the Evil One, while fasting, but overcame the
temptation, putting the Evil One to flight. He was baptized in water with the Spirit of God present. He healed the
sick; fed 500 from a small basket of cakes; walked on water. Buddha came to fulfil the law and preached the
establishment of a kingdom of righteousness. In his final years, Buddha was said to have 'crushed a serpent's
head' and to have been transfigured on a mount ... He was called Good Shepherd; Carpenter; Alpha and Omega;
Sin Bearer; Master; Light of the World; Redeemer; Saviour of the World. Buddha died, buried but arose again after
tomb opened by supernatural powers. Ascended into heaven. Will return in later days to judge the dead.
f. Allegations examined: the difference is in details – totally different purpose and reason.
1. Zeus leaves bloody seed on the ground, from which grows an almond, virgin Nana eats an almond and conceives
Attis. Attis castrates himself beneath a pine tree after he is made to go insane before his wedding by Agdistis when
the he-she becomes enamoured with him. His blood flows onto the ground from his severed organ and brings forth a
patch of violets. No crucifixion here, and no salvation either. Regarding resurrection - Agdistis is overcome with
remorse for her actions and requests Zeus to preserve the beautiful corpse of Attis so it never decomposes. Much
later legends transform Attis into a pine tree.
2. Dionysus is the product of Zeus and Persephone. Hera becomes insanely jealous and tries to destroy the infant by
sending the Titans to kill him. Zeus comes to the rescue but it's too late- the Titans had eaten everything but
Dionysus' heart. Zeus then takes the heart and implants it into the womb of Semele. Hera convinces her to ask Zeus
to reveal his glory to her but because no mortal can look upon the gods and live, Semele is instantly incinerated.
Zeus then takes the fetal Dionysus and sews him into his own thigh until his birth, twice born. He traveled far and
wide teaching people drinking wine and debauchery.
3. Mithra was born of a virgin…solid rock!!! Considered the “primal matter” or the “first mother” (carryover from
Perseus, also born in an underground cavern). Shepherds had to help freeing him out of the cave-rock! He was
born fully mature, so they gave him some flock to eat. He is pictured surrounded by the twelve signs of the zodiac.
His “sacrifice” was in taking the risk to go, fight and kill the great bull. Lion was regarded as Mithra's "totem" animal.
Since Mithra was a sun-god, there was also an association with Leo, which was the House of the Sun in Babylonian
astrology. Should Exxon give up their tiger because of Frosted Flakes? Jesus owned the rights to the lion symbol
as a member of the tribe of Judah (Gen. 49:9) long before Mithras even appeared in his Iranian legend. His sacred
day was Sunday!!!
4. Zarathustra – name is an ancient Iranian compound of zareta (old, feeble) and ustra (camel). His original Persian
name Zarathushtra (Zoroaster is the Greek/English translation) literally translates as owner of old feeble camels.
Born to a normal couple without any miracles. He married his wife Havovi, and had sex with her three times. The
seed from these unions was miraculously preserved in the holy waters of Lake Kans (in modern day Iran). At some
time in the future three virgins will (during three different millennia before the end time) bathe in or drink these waters
, and miraculously conceive the sons of Zarathushtra. "Zoroaster’s followers expected a “second coming” in the
virgin-born Saoshynt or Savior, who is to come in 2341 CE and begin his ministry at age 30, ushering in a golden
age.
5. Krishna never lives as a man on earth. He is a product of a novel, a hero of an epic, a fiction. He was married to
16,100 princesses and had 161,080 sons. The name in Sanskrit actually translates as Black (One) as Krishna was
believed to have blackish-blue skin. virgin birth is never attributed to Krishna as his parents bore seven previous
children. Devaki's six previous children were murdered by her cousin, King Kamsa, due to a prophecy foretelling his
death at the hands of one of her children. A hunter by mistake shot him with an arrow to a tree.
6. Gautama Buddha was born to Suddhodana and his favourite wife of twenty years, Maya. Virgin, as a favourite
wife? Born into wealth and privilege, He finished his education at 15, married at 16, became a monk at 29, reached
enlightenment at 35, and died at 80
7. Horus mother Isis was not a virgin, but the widow of Osiris. When Osiris was killed and dismembered she got his
body parts, one in particular and got pregnant from it, so she can bear a son that would avenge his death. His
disciples – are 12 signs of Zodiac. Horus and Set battle for dominance over Egypt is based on sexual perversion,
and has nothing in common with the Mount Transfiguration experience.
g. Suggested parallels and “copying” is not even a speculation but perversion of facts, and very
recent attempt to divert those who have “no idea” from Christianity. Good book to deal with
issues is “Unmasking the Pagan Christ: An Evangelical Response to the Cosmic Christ Idea” by
Stanley, E. Porter and Stephen , J. Bedard.

IV. Historical Jesus
a. John 17:5  Preexistent, Preincarnate, God always.
b. John 1:2,14  Word became Flesh and dwelt among us; Matthew tells of magi after the
birth; Luke gives most detailed account, with dates of birth, and events surrounding it.
c. Luke 1:26-35; Matthew 1;18-21  born of a virgin Mary
d. Born during the “Census of Quirinius” refers to a historical enrollment of the Roman Provinces of
Syria and Iudaea for the purpose of taxation taken during the reign of the Roman Emperor
Augustus when Publius Sulpicius Quirinius was appointed governor of Syria. 2 B.C.
e. Herod the Great died in 1 B.C. Jesus would have been under 2 years of age at the time Joseph
took the family to Egypt. Other’s suggest herod death to be in 1 B.C.
f. Clement of Alexandria (150-216): "From the birth of Christ, therefore, to the death of Commodus [the
Roman emperor who died on 31 December A.D. 192 (14)] are, in all, a hundred and ninety-four years, one
month, thirteen days" setting Christ's birth on 18 November 3 B.C, or January 6, 2 B.C. Hyppolitus,
(243 A.D.) states that Christ was born on Passover, April 2, 2 B.C. Some suggest a conception
around Passover and birth after New Year. Note: The prophecy predicted the beginning of
His ministry, not his birth-date!
g. Calculation of celestial events are useless. It was not an astronomical event. Ellen G.
White states: “The wise men had seen a mysterious light in the heavens upon that night when the glory
of God flooded the hills of Bethlehem. As the light faded, a luminous star appeared, and lingered in the sky.
It was not a fixed star nor a planet, and the phenomenon excited the keenest interest. That star was a
distant company of shining angels, but of this the wise men were ignorant. Yet they were impressed that the
star was of special import to them.” (1898. Desire of Ages, p.60)
h. Luke 3:1  15th year of Tiberius between 28-29 A.D. (year began in July)
i. John 2:20  46 years of temple building 29 A.D. Passover
j. No precise calendar exists for Nissan 14 between years 27-33 A.D. The Crucifixion may have
taken place in 31 A.D.
k. Council of Nicea (325) established that Christmas was celebrated on the 25th of December.
V. Historical testimony of witnesses
a. Josephus Flavius. Antiquities of the Jews xviii 3.3, (76 A.D.) “Now there was about this time
Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a
teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the
Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the
principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did
not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day; as the divine prophets had
foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of
Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.”
b. Suetonius. Secretary of Emperor Domitianus in the years 90-95. In the “Life of the Twelve
Caesars”, talking about Claudius, Svetonius says “The Hebrews were sent away from Rome in 41
with an edict of Emperor Claudius because they caused continual disorders under the incitement
of a certain Crestos.”
c. Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus, writing in his Annals 15.44 (116 A.D.) about the Great Fire
of Rome (64), included an account of how the emperor Nero blamed the Christians in Rome for
the disaster and initiated the first known persecution. “…to get rid of the report, Nero fastened
the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called
Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme

penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a
most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea,
the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every
part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of
all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so
much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was
added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or
were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly
illumination, when daylight had expired.”
d. Pliny the Younger (A.D. 112) Roman author and administrator, the governor of Bithynia in Asia
Minor, wrote in 112 A.D. two hundred years before the "deity" proclamation, that Christians in
Bithynia worshipped Christ. Two references have been made to a report by Pontius Pilate.
e. Two earliest biographies of Alexander the Great were written by Arrian (Lucius Flavius Arrianus,
87-145 A.D.) and Plutarch of Chaeronea (46-120A.D.) almost 400 years after the death of
Alexander (323 B.C.) – considered fully trustworthy by historians.
VI. Contemporary “Quest” for historical Jesus
a. Jesus Seminar – a group of about 150 individuals including scholars with advanced
degrees in biblical and religious studies, or related fields as well as published authors
who are notable in the field of religion founded in 1985 by the late Robert Funk and John
Dominic Crossan, member of the Roman Catholic Servites order. The seminar uses votes
with colored beads to decide their collective view of the historicity of Jesus, specifically
what he may or may not have said and done as an historical figure.
1. Red beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus did say the passage quoted, or something very much
like the passage. (3 Points)
2. Pink beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus probably said something like the passage. (2 Points)
3. Grey beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus did not say the passage, but it contains Jesus' ideas.

4. Black beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus did not say the passage—it comes from later
admirers or a different tradition. (0 Points)

e. “Swoon theory”  German Karl Friedrich Bahrdt, who suggested in around 1780, that
Jesus deliberately feigned his death, using drugs provided by the physician Luke to
appear as a spiritual messiah and get Israel to abandon the idea of a political messiah. In
this interpretation of the events described in the Gospels, Jesus was resuscitated by
Joseph of Arimathea, with whom he shared a connection through a secret order of the
Essenes.

The empty tomb they explain was body discarded, Charles T. Russell taught that the body
dissolved into gases or maybe preserved somewhere as a memorial of God’s love. Postresurrection appearances are presented as apparitions, visions.

c. In 1949 Pennsylvania conference president, T. E. Unruh, sent Ellen White's book, Steps to
Christ to an evangelical Bible teacher and the founder/editor of a conservative Christian
magazine Eternity (1931-1980), Donald Grey Barnhouse. In 1955 the magazine
commissioned Walter Martin to write a book about Seventh-day Adventists. Series of

dialogues began in March 1955 with Adventist representatives Le Roy Edwin Froom, W. E.
Read and Roy Allan Anderson. With suspicion both sides worked through a list of 40
questions. Main allegations were on 4 points of Adventist beliefs:
1. the atonement was not completed at the cross;
2. salvation is the result of grace plus the works of the law;
3. Jesus was a created being, not from all eternity;
4. Jesus partook of man's sinful, fallen nature at the incarnation.
The most problematic topic was the Adventist understanding of the human nature of Christ.
Earlier William H. Branson, Adventist General Conference President, had written that Christ
"took upon Himself sinful flesh." Most Adventists prior to 1950 agreed with this statement.
d. By the summer of 1956 the small group of evangelicals became convinced that Seventh-day
Adventists were sufficiently orthodox to be considered Christian. Barnhouse published his
conclusions in the September 1956 issue of Eternity magazine in the article, "Are Seventhday Adventists Christians?" In it, they concluded, "Seventh-day Adventists are a truly
Christian group, rather than an anti-Christian cult." This article surprised its readers, and
6,000 cancelled their subscriptions in protest. Following this, Adventists were gradually
invited to participate in Billy Graham's crusades.
e. 1957 Seventh-day Adventists Answer Questions on Doctrine (QOD) was provided free to
every denominational office and worker, and other denominations received. Between 1957
was not reprinted until 1963. Up to 980 it was published with 150,000 in circulation, causing
greater and greater controversy. In 1986 Walter Martin said
"If the Seventh-day Adventist [Church] will not back up its answers with actions and put
Questions on Doctrine back in print then they're in real trouble that I can't help them out of;
and nobody else can either." The book was not reprinted until 2003 by Andrews University.
George Knight, the editor of annotated version said: "The publication of Questions on
Doctrine did more than any other single event in Adventist history to create what appear to
be permanently warring factions within the denomination."

liabilities, but he was free from hereditary corruption…Christ’s humanity was not Adamic
humanity, that is, the humanity of Adam before the fall, nor fallen humanity; that is in every
respect the humanity of Adam after the fall. It was not the Adamic because it had the
innocent infirmities of the fallen; it was not the fallen, because it had never descended into
moral impurity. …The Bible portrays Jesus’ humanity as sinless. His birth was supernatural.

5. 1895 “The Bakker letter” addressed to a pastor in Tasmania. Be careful, exceedingly
careful as to how you dwell upon the human nature of Christ. Do not set Him before the
people as a man with the propensities of sin. He is the second Adam. The first Adam was
created a pure, sinless being, without a taint of sin upon him; he was in the image of God.
He could fall, and he did fall through transgressing. Because of sin, his posterity was born
with inherent propensities of disobedience. But Jesus Christ was the only begotten Son of
God. He took upon Himself human nature, and was tempted in all points as human nature is
tempted. He could have sinned; He could have fallen, but not for one moment was there in
Him an evil propensity. Bro. Baker, avoid every question in relation to the humanity of
Christ which is liable to be misunderstood. Truth lies close to the track of presumption. In
treating upon the humanity of Christ, you need to guard strenuously every assertion, lest
your words be taken to mean more than they imply, and thus you lose or dim the clear
perceptions of His humanity as combined with divinity….

…The Lord Jesus Christ, when He took humanity upon Him, was not for this reason less
perfect. He came in this lowly garb that humanity might reach humanity. He hungered, He
thirsted, He was weary and needed rest, He wept tears of sadness, He was "in all points
tempted like as we are;" yet He was the divine Son of God. The human and the divine were
blended, and those who humbly seek God through Him will be made partakers of the divine
nature.
