Unit I:
Individualism: choosing between security and individualism (Utopia/Dystopia)
 TIME FRAME: 4-6 Weeks
 Short-stories which may include: The Interlopers, Harrison Bergeron, The Ones
Who Walked Away from Omelas, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado,
The Most Dangerous Game, excerpt from The Declaration of Independence,
Genesis 2 & 3, The Machine Stops, etc.
 Related Videos may include: “Interlopers: A Short Film by Ben Hurst
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upw0e5j2uJg&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_
mode=1&safe=active), short film “2081” (based on Harrison Bergeron), Irving
Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1932 movie The Most Dangerous Game,
YouTube videos of “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado”,
 Songs which may include: “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles, “Blowing in the
Wind” by Bob Dylan, “Imagine” by John Lennon, “Utopia” by Alanis Morissette,
etc.
 Excerpts from Novels (which may include: Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Flies,
Feed, Brave New World, The Giver, etc.)
 Writing may include: argumentative and/or narrative essay, journal entries,
quick writes, answer daily essential questions (found within the actual unit plan
attached), etc.
Unit II:
Race Relations: Learned Racism (To Kill a Mockingbird)
 TIME FRAME: 4-6 Weeks
 Anchor Text: To Kill a Mockingbird
 Related texts and excerpts may include: “Jim Crow in America”, “The Origin of
Jim Crow”, “Who was Jim Crow”, “What was Jim Crow”, Growing Up Black
1930’s”, “Letter From a Birmingham Jail”, Black Boy, Blood Done Sign My Name,
etc.
 Related Videos may include: To Kill a Mockingbird (movie), A Class Divided
(Frontline, PBS), Freedom Riders (PBS), The Scottsboro Trials (PBS), What Would
You Do? (CBS), etc.
 Writing may include: argumentative and/or narrative essay, journal entries,
quick writes, answer daily essential questions (found within the actual unit plan
attached), MGP – Students will choose a social injustice (racism, sexism,
discrimination against anyone) and create a multi-genre project to bring
awareness to the injustice.
Unit III:
Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet
 TIME FRAME: 4-6 Weeks
 Anchor Text: Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (No Fear Shakespeare)


“Web-Quest”, Pyramid Project (small MGP which includes newspaper with
multiple articles), Re-write a scene translating Shakespeare’s language into
“high-school speak” with stage directions included, etc.
