“Life of a Slave” Poster
Summary: You and your group will be creating a poster in which you depict the
life of the average slave through your study of our 4 main points of interest. You
should create a rough draft of your poster for someone to look over and provide
suggestions for before creating the final “draft.” Mr. F and I will be available to
fulfill this role.
Checklist:
-Middle Passage: Your study of this area should include the following
information:
▪What the Middle Passage is (a definition) in your own words.
▪How Africans were gathered for the journey.
▪The conditions that slaves faced while travelling through it.
-Indentured Servitude: Your study of this area should include the following
information:
▪A definition, in your own words, of both indentured servitude and slavery.
▪A list of several differences between the two forms of labor.
▪When the colonies chose to move away from indentured servitude and
towards slavery.
-Life of a Slave: Your study of this area should include the following information:
▪The conditions that slaves would live in (noting the differences between
the likes of field workers and plantation home slaves), including living
conditions, rights, and work.
▪The treatment that slaves could expect from their white owners, and the
rules that slave owners had to follow.
▪The punishments slaves could face for “bad behavior.”
-Slave Resistance: Your study of this area should include the following
information:
▪The various types of resistance that slaves used (running away, day-to-day,
etc…).
▪Specific examples of resistance (New York City, 1712 as an example).
▪Common consequences of slave resistance.
-Other Notes: Your poster should provide all of these elements in a clear,
coherent matter. Each of the 4 main points should also include anywhere from
2-3 relevant pictures (either drawn or printed) to support your information.
Remember, me and Mr. F are available if you need any assistance!
“My Life as a Slave” Journal
Directions: You and your group will be creating a journal in which you each depict
1 of the 4 main points of our research on slavery through the eyes of a slave. As
such, you should write about your experiences as if you yourselves were the slave
(for example, use “I” when describing the daily life of a slave). You should first
create a rough draft for someone to read and provide suggestions before creating
the final product. Mr. F and I will be available to fulfill this role.
Checklist:
-Middle Passage: This journal entry should include the following information:
▪What the Middle Passage is (a definition) in your own words.
▪How you were gathered for the journey.
▪The conditions that you and other slaves faced while travelling through it.
-Indentured Servitude: This journal entry should include the following
information:
▪A definition, in your own words, of both indentured servitude and slavery.
▪A list of several differences between the two forms of labor.
▪When the colonies chose to move towards slavery
-Life of a Slave: This journal entry should include the following information:
▪The conditions that you live in (noting the differences between the likes of
field workers and plantation home slaves, and defining yourself as one or
the other), include living conditions, rights, and work.
▪The treatment that you and other slaves could expect from your white
owners, and the rules that slave owners had to follow.
▪The punishments that you and other slaves could face for “bad behavior.”
-Slave Resistance: This journal entry should include the following information:
▪The various types of resistance that you and other slaves used (running
away, day-to-day, etc…).
▪Specific examples of resistance (New York City, 1712 as an example) that
you have heard about.
▪Common consequences of slave resistance that you must fear.
-Other Notes: As noted above, this is a journal entry, not a report. Make sure
you write it as if you are a slave in colonial times. All journal entries should also
have correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Remember, Mr. F and I are
available if you need any assistance!
Slavery “Trading Cards”
Directions: You and your group will create a series of trading cards, each
depicting an aspect of one of the 4 main points of interest in our study of slavery.
Like any good trading card, each should have a picture on one side and
information on the other. You should also create a series of “rough” trading cards
for someone to read and give suggestions for before creating the final product.
Mr. F and I will be available to fulfill this role.
Checklist:
-Middle Passage: Your cards here should include the following information:
▪What the Middle Passage is (a definition) in your own words.
▪How Africans were gathered for the journey.
▪The conditions that slaves faced while travelling through it.
-Indentured Servitude: Your cards in this area should include the following
information:
▪A definition, in your own words, of both indentured servitude and slavery.
▪A list of several differences between the two forms of labor.
▪When the colonies chose to move away from indentured servitude and
towards slavery.
-Life of a Slave: Your cards in this area should include the following information:
▪The conditions that slaves would live in (noting the differences between
the likes of field workers and plantation home slaves), including living
conditions, rights, and work.
▪The treatment that slaves could expect from their white owners, and the
rules that slave owners had to follow.
▪The punishments slaves could face for “bad behavior.”
-Slave Resistance: Your cards in this area should include the following
information:
▪The various types of resistance that slaves used (running away, day-to-day,
etc…).
▪Specific examples of resistance (New York City, 1712 as an example).
▪Common consequences of slave resistance.
-Other Notes: I am expecting at least 2-3 cards for each area of focus, each with
a picture on one side of each card and at least 3 solid statistics/pieces of
information on the other. The information should be accurate and based on
your research. Remember, Mr. F and I are available if you need any assistance!
