Define: Matrimony Fidelity Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 Matrimony is a Sacrament at the Service of Communion A baptized man and woman enter a lifelong commitment They promise to accept children as a gift from God Their love is a sign of God’s love for all his people The Rite of Marriage usually takes place during Mass Couples pick their readings. After the Gospel, the Rite of Marriage begins. The Priest asks 3 important questions: 1. 2. 3. Are they free to give themselves in marriage? Will they love and honor each other for the rest of their lives? Will they lovingly accept children and raise them in their faith? Chapter 18 ~ lesson 1 There are two Scripture accounts of Jesus attending a wedding or visiting a married couple. The Wedding Feast at Cana John 2: 1-12 Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 Holy Orders After Jesus’ death and Resurrection, Jesus returned to his apostles and told them to continue his work. He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” The apostles would minister to the people, lead them in worship, baptize, heal, and forgive in his name. The apostles chose leaders to help in the community. These leaders were called bishops and did the work of the Apostles. Guided by the Holy Spirit, the bishops continued the work of the Apostles. Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 Ordained priests and bishops form the ministerial priesthood. Deacons become part of the ministry of service of the Church. Baptized men spend years at a seminary. They are sealed with a sacramental character forever. They can only receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders once. Some men, single or married become permanent deacons for life. diaconate – men ordained as deacons into the diaconate. presbyterate – deacons who continue on to become priests become part of the presbyterate. priest – a man ordained to preach the Gospel and serve the faithful. episcopate – a priest who becomes a bishop is ordained into the episcopate. Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 bishop – a bishop receives the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and continues the Apostle’s mission of leadership and service. The Sacrament of Holy Orders Always takes place during Mass The Liturgy of the Word includes readings about ministry After the Gospel, those to be ordained are presented to the bishop The bishop asks all present to pray for God’s blessings The bishop and other priests lay their hands upon those being ordained.
