Materials:
 White butcher paper
 Markers
 Black crayons/markers
 Crayons
 Classroom timeline (teacher created)
 A picture book of Helen Keller (most likely in English, but
just show the pictures and read in Chinese)
 Large picture of Helen Keller
Lesson:
Instructional Time: 30 minutes
Opening: (3 minutes)
T: “Today we are going to start with talking about the people in our community.”
T: “Who are the people you see in our community? Are there old people? Are there young people? Are there people with black
hair? Are there people with blue eyes? Are there doctors? Are there garbage men? Who are the people in our community? Tell
your neighbor about 3 people in our community.”
S: will tell their neighbor about 3 people in the community.
T: “Raise your hand and tell me about the people in our community.”
S: will respond.
 Give the students time to describe at least 10 different people if not more.
 Write down what the students say in a list on the board. (you could use pictures next to the words)
T: “Yes, all those people live in our community.”

Introduction to New Material (Direct Instruction): (6 minutes)
T: “And each of those people have a unique story that is just theirs. Each persons story is a list of experiences, it is their life
story.”
T: “Look at all the people we came up with and all the personal stories that match each person, our community is like a big book
of stories that is bound together.”
T: “I am going to give you 1 minute to think about your own personal story. Don’t talk to your neighbor, just think about
different things that have happened to you in your life.”
S: will think for 1 minute out their own lives.
T: “Now I am going to tell you a story about someone else. I am going to read you a story about Helen Keller.”
T: “Helen Keller is an important person from history. So, let’s learn about her.”
 Read the story.
T: “Let’s talk about her life. Tell your neighbor 1 thing you learned about Helen Keller. Say, ‘I learned _____’.”
S: will tell their neighbor 1 thing they learned about Helen Keller. “I learned ________.”
T: “Tell me about Helen Keller. What did you learn?”
S: will respond, “I learned ______.”
Guided Practice (12-15 minutes)
Modeling Cycle
Teacher Does:
T: “Now I want you to think about your story again. What has happened in your life? You have 30 seconds to think again.”
S: will think about their lives.
T: “Today you are going to make a timeline of your story. But, before you begin I am going to do an example with you of my
story.”
 Before you begin telling your story show the students how to fold the paper into 8 squares.
 Then tell your story and draw it on your paper.
 On your timeline draw 4 major events; i.e. birth, starting school, 2nd grade, high school, sports, college, marriage, etc.
T: “This is my timeline. I now want you to draw your story/timeline on your paper.”
All Students Do:
T: “I am going to pass out your paper and we are going to fold it together.”
 Fold the paper together.
T: “Now, I want you to draw your story. Choose 4 events that have happened in your life. I will walk around and help as you
need it. I am so excited to learn about your stories!
S: will work on their timelines.
T: “You have 1 minute left.”
T: “Please clean up your desk and come sit on the carpet. You have 10 seconds. 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1.”
Closing: (4 minutes)
T: “Thank you for coming to the carpet so quickly.”
T: “Earlier I told you about my story. Now, I want you to tell the class about your story. I want you to say, “1 st _____, 2nd ______,
3rd ______, 4th______.... For example, 1st I was born. 2nd I was crawled… I will help you as needed. Who wants to go first?”
S: will present their stories.
 Allow 5 students to present today. But allow students to present everyday until all students have presented their stories.

Homework: have parents help them with the dates of each event.
