What is the Texas Educator Certification
Program?
Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §230.5(b)
requires every person seeking educator
certification in Texas to perform satisfactorily
on comprehensive examinations. The purpose of
the examinations is to ensure that each educator
has the prerequisite content and professional
knowledge necessary for an entry-level position
in Texas public schools. The following programs
were developed for this purpose.
►

►
Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™
(TExES™)
Texas Examinations for Master Teachers™
(TExMaT™)

Further information about these programs and
the examinations that are offered is available
in each program’s Registration Bulletin and on
the ETS TExES website at www.texes.ets.org.
Registration Bulletins can be downloaded free

►

►
Monday PBT testing can be arranged if your
religious convictions prevent you from testing
on Saturday or you are a member of the
armed forces and have duties that prevent
you from testing on Saturday.
Testing accommodations can be arranged
if you have a disability or health-related
need that requires accommodations. The
Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with
Disabilities or Health-Related Needs contains
contact information, registration procedures
and forms.
Further information and the Supplement
are available in the “Alternative Testing
Arrangements” section of the ETS TExES
website at www.texes.ets.org.
What should I know about ID
requirements?
Valid and acceptable identification with your
name, signature and photograph is required
for admission to a test. ID requirements are
strictly enforced. Further information and a list
of acceptable ID documents are available on the
ETS TExES website at www.texes.ets.org.
What security measures are taken at
test centers?
You may be photographed and fingerprinted as
confirmation of your identity. At some CAT testing
centers, the use of electronic detection scanning
devices (e.g., hand-held detectors/wands) has
also been implemented. Failure to comply with
these security measures will result in dismissal
from the test and forfeiture of your test fees.
Where can I find test preparation
materials?
A wide variety of free preparation materials is
available on the ETS TExES website. You can
download Preparation Manuals for TExES, TExMaT
and TASC/TASC-ASL tests as well as other
publications such as Tests at a Glance, Reducing
Test Anxiety and Study Tips: Preparing for the
Texas Educator Certification Tests. Videos and
interactive demonstrations of computeradministered tests are also available to familiarize
you with what happens on test day and help you
get ready for testing.
When will my scores be available?
See the testing schedule on the back of this
brochure.
How do I apply for certification?
Application for certification does not proceed
automatically based upon receipt of your scores
by Texas Education Agency (TEA). To apply for
certification, you must go to the TEA website at
www.tea.state.tx.us and follow the application
for certification instructions.
