Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), We are very excited that NRMS will once again be holding an Elementary Battle of the Books competition this year. We would like to invite all interested students to participate. Students will read the books and have Book Club meetings throughout the year. Students will have specific deadlines to meet throughout the year so that they are able to read all the books. We will get into more specifics next year. The “weapon” in the book battle competition is the knowledge they obtain and the details they can recall through reading the assigned books. In order to participate, your child must follow these guidelines: 1. 2. 3. 4. Read the fourteen required books. Write five questions for the books read. (Sample questions included.) Take the Accelerated Reader test. (Can take these when school is in session.) Attend meetings and practice. (During the school year) Students who are interested must read the books on the list, take and pass the Accelerated Reader test, then write and turn in five questions per book. Dates and competition plans will be announced throughout the school year. At this time, we are inviting students to participate. If your child is interested, please see the attached list for the book titles. He/She may begin reading immediately. We will be sending home a commitment letter in August to see how many students have started reading and are committed to this program. This is an optional enrichment opportunity that we hope your child will choose to get involved with and enjoy. We look forward to this opportunity to work with your child if he/she so chooses to participate in this academic competition this year. The book list and sample questions are attached. Cooley Library, Braswell Library and Coopers have these books for students to check-out. Please contact us if you have any questions at kdadkins@nrms.k12.nc.us or at 937-5612. After each question include the book title, author and page number… “P98.” Examples include: 1. In which book does an eight year old have to face the challenges of autism? Rules by Cynthia Lord (pg. 8) 2. In which book does a young boy have a favorite red umbrella? Rules by Cynthia Lord (pg. 4) 3. In which book do the characters use radio code? Through reading the books, writing questions, group discussions, parent interaction, teacher involvement, debating, preparing for battle and a little healthy academic competition; students will find numerous positive outcomes!
