An Image of Africa: Article Response
Now that we have finished reading, Heart of Darkness, we need to take the opportunity to look at
critical analysis of the text, in order to challenge our perspectives and more fully understand the
complexity of the novella.
On my webpage, under “Articles” you will find an essay called “An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s
Heart of Darkness”. You will need to read that article, in its entirety and respond to the author’s
analysis, in a Summary-Analysis-Response paper. Your response will need to consist of the following
criteria:





A brief summary of the essay in complete sentences.
Describe how the essay is organized
Identify the author’s claim and the main points used for support.
How does the author establish authority or credibility?
What audience does the author assume?
Once these have all been accounted for, you need to respond to the essay and its effectiveness.




Do you agree (disagree) with the author’s claim?
Did the author have sufficient support?
Has something been ignored or overlooked by the author?
How effective was the argument, based on the intended audience?
You can agree with the essay, disagree with it, or find aspects that fall into both categories.

Purpose: This assignment will help students evaluate and critique their resources. Likewise, it will
introduce to them the idea that sources need to be used more efficiently within their research papers.
