Intro

• Initially, the US

Constitution did little to protect its citizens from actions of the states.

• In the 20 th century, the supreme court interpreted the constitution to protect the rights of citizens from state governments in a process referred to as incorporation.

• Selective Incorporation is a legal code that protects rights and privileges of all citizens of the US from state laws.

• The supreme court follows selective incorporation and upholds individual clauses in amendments

296 (1940) held that the state couldn't impose restrictions on religious grounds.
