France and Britain were in
dispute over the upper Ohio
Valley.
France Takes Action


1749 France ordered the removal of
all British from the Ohio Valley.
This ensured that the British territory
was confined to the east side of the
Appalachian Mountains
Native American Alliances
 Allied with the French and
British
 NA Helped French by Raiding
British Settlements
 By allying with both sides it
upset the balance of power.
The Colonist Take Action


1753 George Washington was sent to
Ohio Valley to remove French.
The French refused to leave and
claimed that it was “absolute
design”, to take possession of Ohio.

Militia-military force composed
of ordinary citizens to provide
defense.
1754 a militia run by Lieutenant
Washington was instructed to
create a fort.
Although greatly outnumbered
Washington decided to attack a
French scouting party.

forest and shot at their bright
uniforms.
Braddock was killed in battle
War on France
Britain declared a war on
France in Europe.
The first years of the war
were disastrous for the
British they lost forts and
settlements were raided

Paid for the war and created an
enormous debt for Britain
After the war Pitt increased their
taxes to pay for the bill.
At this time the colonist were
paying ¼ of the taxes that a
British citizen did.

 To halt further conflict King George the third
made the Proclamation of 1763
 Stopped expansion of the colonies to the west
of the Appalachian mountains.
 Colonist were mad that KG3 had ignored their
land claims.
In Conclusion
The French and Indian war
was over land and power.
What the British did not know
was that this was the beginning
of a bigger situation in the
colonies.
