Friar Lawrence – Though he is trying to
help Juliet in this act, the friar is actually
making things worse. He is both an adult
and a religious role model. He needs to
be setting a good example, but instead
he is encouraging Juliet to lie and fake
her own death.
Juliet – This act reflects the desperation
of Juliet. She is so desperate to be with
Romeo that she is willing to fake her own
death to be with him.
Juliet’s Parents – When they come into
her room and see her “dead” at the end
of the act, their reaction is full of
emotion. This is surprising considering
how uninvolved they have been in their
life of their daughter thus far.

Monologue – a long, uninterrupted
speech that a character gives while they
are with other characters. The Friar has
an important monologue in Act IV, scene
i as he explains “the plan” to Juliet.
Soliloquy – a speech that a character
gives while they are alone on stage. This
is intended to show the audience the
inner thoughts of the character.
Juliet has a significant soliloquy in Act IV,
scene iii before she takes the potion.
Personification – Giving non-living things
human characteristics. Once example of
this is seen in Act V, scene v when Juliet’s
father sees her “dead” and he says
“Death is my son in law, Death is my
heir.”

“Even well-intended deceptions and
secrets can be destructive”
This act introduces another huge secret
(Juliet faking her death) and we already
know how this is going to end. Juliet’s lies
are going to have nasty consequences in
just a few hours.
“Teens make hasty decisions without
thinking of the consequences”
Juliet is not thinking about the pain she is
causing to her loved ones or what this
decision could lead to in the long term.
She is totally focused on herself and her
current feelings.
“Religious distortion”
The friar is not living up to his role as a
respected religious authority. He is
assisting Juliet in this plan, which is making
a bad situation worse.
