CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including
figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word
choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place;
how it sets a formal or informal tone).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the
course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details;
provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.1
Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using
valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Key Shifts
Shift 3: Staircase of Complexity Students read the central, grade appropriate text around
which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient, create more time and space and
support in the curriculum for close reading.
Shift 4: Text-based Answers Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based
conversations about text.
Shift 6: Academic Vocabulary Students constantly build the transferable vocabulary they
need to access grade level complex texts. This can be done effectively by spiraling like
content in increasingly complex texts.

Sample Conclusion
10/29/2015
[1]With great power comes great responsibility. [2] Robert Moses, a man
given such great power, did not use it responsibly. [3] He had a negative
impact on New York City because he dispossessed a lot of people to
build his universities and other projects in New York City and because
he caused multitudes in the Bronx to be without a safe place to live
when he built the Cross-Bronx Expressway. [4] This is important
because it should serve as a warning to those who would also attempt
to do the same thing, and to those of us here. [5] There should be no
one man with so much unbridled, limitless power because of the
potential to abuse that same power, as we saw with Robert Moses.
