Sheela Ramanath underwent initial training under Smt. Sridevi Thirumalai in Bangalore in the
Vazhuvoor style. Sheela’s deepening interest led her to renowned dancer and scholar, Guru
Bhanumati of Nrityakalamandiram, Bangalore. Under her able guidance, Sheela focused on
advanced aspects of nritta, abhinaya, and choreography. She continues to receive guidance
from her mentor Sri Pappu Venugopala Rao who is a renowned scholar and musicologist.
Sheela’s professional career began as a member of the renowned troupe Bharatanjali,
founded by Guru Bhanumati. Sheela has to her credit numerous shows in India, the USA, and
the UK, both as a soloist and as part of Bharatanjali. Some major performance venues include
the Hampi Utsav in Karnataka, India; Indian national television; International Children’s
Festival at Wolftrap; the National Theater in Washington, DC, Interfaith Conference, DC etc.
After moving to the United States, Sheela started her own dance school, Kalavaridhi in 2001.
She builds upon her gurus’ teaching methods, creatively adapting them to each student.
Through lecture-demonstrations and illustrated recitals, she strives to mold young artists into
versatile dancers. Her manner is gentle and unhurried, yet uncompromising on quality. She
inspires her students to constantly better themselves. Sheela believes that teaching has in
turn taught her so much more. She aims to imbibe a sense of mutual appreciation in her
students, which she considers essential in every artist.
Sheela served as a faculty member at the Academy of Indian Culture and Arts (AICA) in
Sterling, Virginia. She is currently an empanelled artist of Fairfax County's Creative Arts
Program.
