MCCARTHYISM
McCarthyism is the
practice of making
accusations of
disloyalty,
corruption, or
treason without
proper regard for
evidence.
Citizens of the united states
felt that it wasn’t correct
that they were being
investigated; to see if they
were communists or if they had
any type of involvement with
communism. They felt that they
were being violated from their
rights to freedom of speech.
They would often ruin the lives
of people by publicly making
people look bad.
In the 1950s, people were afraid
because there were several
cases where communists groups
rose to power in many different
countries. A majority of people
were scared that this could
happen in the US, and some were
worried that high-ranking
government officials could have
been secret communists waiting
for a chance to use their power
to help a foreign enemy.
People that were victimized
during that era most of the
time they couldn’t find a job
afterwards. This was often
the case even if they were at
some point free of any guilt. In
part, this was because of the
fear that any partnership
with someone who had been
investigated might make a
person or company look
suspicious.
Over time, "McCarthyism"
has been used to describe
any kind of movement
where people use rumors
and insinuations to
publicly attack people
for a belief or political
leaning.
propaganda pushes the
limits of freedom of speech
because it allows you to
express yourself even
more. It gives you free
activity to explain
whatever you are
advertising. It will not be
taken as an offense; it
will be accepted as a
general idea.
