Plot Projects
 Pick 5-7 events from the story and act them out. A narrator will read the
exposition and the resolution of the story.
 Pick 10-12 events from the story write a pop-up book of the story. You
will include the exposition and resolution of the story as well.
 Pick 15-17 events from the story and write a comic-strip of the story.
 Pick 20 events from the story and use them to make a board game of
your book.
 Draw a plot mountain of the story. When you finish the plot mountain,
write a paragraph describing a theme of the story. Highlight the events
in the plot mountain which best show the theme you chose.
Conflict
 Identify the types of conflict in the story: man vs. man, man vs. society,
man vs. himself, man vs. nature—Write 5 examples of each type of
conflict & explain how the conflict moves the story along the plot
 Identify the conflict in the story—identify ways to solve the conflict—
one solves the conflict & one that makes the conflict worse
 Do a fortunately & unfortunately book –19 events from the story ( 1 per
chapter)
Character Traits
 Team character analysis essay. Everyone will work together to write the
introduction and conclusions of the essay and each group member will
write a body paragraph essay describing one quality about the
character. Your team will turn in the essay together. You will have two
class periods to work on this. It will be turned in at the end of the
second class period.
 Write a character change poem for Timothy and Phillip
 Write three, 8-10 sentence diary entries from both of the main
characters’ perspectives. The entries should be from the beginning,
middle, and end of the story. Your 1st entry should describe the
exposition of the story, your second should describe the rising action
and your third should describe the climax, falling action, and theme.
Write about the events & the character’s thoughts feelings & reactions
to the events.
 Write a poem/song or a series of poems/song explaining the main
characters feelings/ thoughts/believes/opinions lessons learned as
she/he goes through the story. You need to include information from
the beginning, middle, and end of the story in your writing.
Theme Traits
 Make a theme quilt draw/paint/ create a picture of a scene that best
represents a theme of the book. Write two paragraphs about it. One
paragraph needs to describe the theme of the story. The other
paragraph tells why that scene best shows the theme.
 Write a team theme analysis essay
 Make a sound track for the book—Identify 8-10 major themes in the
story & pick a song to go with each theme—burn a CD of the music.
 Write a couple of interviews where you ask Phillip and Timothy to reflect
on their experiences on the Cay. There should be about twenty
questions (10 for each character). You will write the questions and then
respond in the way you think the characters would answer. You must
pick questions that focus on the themes of the story.
Literary Devices & Symbolism
 Identify 8-10 symbols from the story—Draw images of the write a
paragraph explaining how the author uses the symbols in the story &
the purpose of the symbols.
 Make a booklet of similes, metaphors, personifications, imagery,
alliterations, foreshadowing & flashbacks. (Need at least one of each
literary device & need 16 examples altogether)
 Make a Literary device poster—showing one example of each type of
device—write the sentence, a translation of what the sentence is saying
and a picture of the literary device.
 Write a literary analysis essay explaining how the use of the symbolism,
similes, metaphors, and imagery affect the story.
