Course Description: Prerequisites/Corequisites: For undergraduates, HCA 300 (previously
402) and 341. For graduates HCA 502 and HCA 515.Fundamental operational responsibilities of
medical group administration today, with emphasis on finance, operations and management
skills. Letter grade only (A-F). (Lecture)
Course Outcomes, Competencies, and Assessments. The Health Care Administration
Department has adopted a competency-based curriculum, based on the American College of
Health Care Executives (ACHE) Competencies Assessment Tool and the Healthcare Leadership
Alliance (HLA) Competency Directory. This course is designed to develop competencies in the
HLA domains of leadership (#2), professionalism (#3), knowledge of the healthcare environment
(#4), business knowledge and skills and knowledge (#5). The chart below describes course

Student Assignments and Grading
1. Class Attendance, Preparation and Participation: You are expected to have read the
assigned readings for the week, be prepared to comment on them, and to actively
participate in class discussions. Lectures will cover highlights of the reading and include
supplementary information. If you have trouble understanding what you read or hear, please
ask for clarification in class or make an appointment with me to discuss the problem area(s).

Disabled students requiring special accommodations, please advise instructor early in the
course.
Participation is 5% of your course grade. You will have various opportunities to earn
participation points throughout the semester. These include but are not limited to:
Commenting on the assigned reading, asking or answering questions when called on in
class.
Formulating answers in your group to problem situations (mini case studies).
Guest speakers: You will learn more from guest speakers if you: a) learn something about
their organization or function beforehand (go to the website, when applicable); and b)
formulate a question or two to ask them. This will also help your class participation grade!

Group Project & Presentation: Groups of students will prepare and present a solution for a
medical group problem. Document with appropriate bibliographic and electronic citation
protocols in APA style; see style manual and (for website citations)

You will submit your product in two parts: (1) Outline, two weeks after planning meeting
with professor; (2) Final draft, two weeks prior to presentation date. The entire project is
worth 30% of your grade.

Group presentations (up to 30 minutes, including time for questions) will be scheduled
for the second half of the semester. You will have time in class most weeks for group work
sessions and consultations with the instructor. All participants in the group will receive the same
grade for the written plan and group presentation. Each student will also receive an individual
grade for teamwork based on confidential peer review evaluations by other members of the
group. One member of your group should submit to instructor at aol email:
a. 1 page summary1 week after meeting with instructor
b. Slide presentation and 1-page summary 2 weeks prior to presentation date
1. Exams: There will be a mid-term and a final exam (multiple choice and true-false format..
The exam questions will come from the readings, class lectures and guest lecture/student
presentations. The mid-term will cover pages 1-280. chapter 1 thru 10. The final will be
cumulative, with more emphasis on material from sessions since the midterm. Disabled
students who qualify for alternative testing arrangements, please advise the instructor well in
advance of the exams.

3.Performance Expectations and Deadlines: Assignments are due on the date specified. Late
assignments lose 20% of points for each week past the deadline.
4. Extra Credit. You may earn up to 20 points of extra credit if you:
a. Join the HCA Student Forum, the American College of Healthcare Executives, Health
Care Executives Association, Women in Health Administration, or the Healthcare Financial
Management Association or the Medical Group Management Association,. Others? Ask.
Submit proof of membership. (5 points/association)
b. Attend meetings of the HCA Student Forum (5 points/meeting); sign attendance sheet.
c. Attend a CSULB Career Development workshop (see http://careers.csulb.edu), a campus
networking event, or healthcare professional association meeting. A list of organizations can
be found at: http://www.csulb.edu/depts/hca/career_info.htm. (5 points/meeting). Submit
proof of attendance.
e. Meet with a networking contact and submit a 1 page report: Who, why, etc. (5 pts.)

Withdrawal after 2nd week and before final 3 weeks “permissible for serious and compelling
