Course Description: Students will study Latin vocabulary and grammar. There are vocabulary quizzes, forms
quizzes, and unit tests. Actual dates will be announced and posted each week. Students will always have the material

that will be on a quiz or test one or more days in advance, usually on a pre-test. Grades are calculated from the

Classwork/Homework is 30% of the grade
Quizzes/Tests/Projects are 70% of the grade
Notebooks: Students are to keep a folder with clasps or a 3-ring binder for notes and work, and pockets for keeping
handouts, returned quizzes and tests. Students lose 10% per day for assignments turned in late.

First Year Jenney (Chapters 32-60); Latin for Americans
We still study grammar, vocabulary derivatives, and do practice exercises integrated with the readings. We will
also study more Greek, Roman, and Roman Britain history as well as more mythology.
Textbooks:
Projects, The first major project is due December 5.
Students may choose any category from the following:. models, textiles, drawings, paintings, 2-D art (Mosaics, wood
burning, stained glass), 3-D Art (pottery/sculpture), modern myth, illustrated writing; photography; charts, maps, games,
misc.. Those enrolled in an art class are encouraged to do one in conjunction with that class. The subject matter must fall
between the dates of 753 BC and 450 AD and must reflect ancient Roman, Greek or Egyptian culture.
Students may also choose from several oral categories (original declamation or oration; dramatic readings chosen
by the National Junior Classical League) and costumes (chosen by the NJCL – Boys: Phaethon, Girls: Circe, Couples:
Aphrodite and Hephaestus).
Latin Regional Competition is on Saturday, January 31, 2015, hosted by Oak Hall School in Gainesville. All Latin
students must attend and compete. Only school-related conflicts will be excused. Cost is $35. covering bus,
registration, breakfast snack, and lunch. Money due in December 5. There will be a fall fundraiser to help with
these and other field trip expenses.
Mrs. Ogles’ Classy Rules:
1. Be On Time: arrive before the tardy bell rings.
If a student arrives after the tardy bell, they must bring a
pass to enter the room.
2. Be Prepared to Work:
have homework, textbooks, paper, pen/pencil
3. Be Courteous:
pay attention, work quietly, don’t disturb others
4. Be sure to Keep Your Area Clean:
pick up your paper & other possessions;
don’t chew gum or eat or drink during class.
Consequences for Un-Classy Behavior
1st time:
Warning
2nd time: Call parent
3rd time: Detention
4th time: Referral to Administrator
Level II & above infractions:
Automatic referral to Administrator
Optional activities:
Leesburg High’s Latin Club is part of the Florida Junior Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, the
largest student organization in the world. Activities include meetings, activities, and field trips.
A) Field Trips: Ringling Museum & Tampa Museum of Art; Winter Park Art; Salvadore Dali, Chuhuly Exhibit,
Clayworks.
B) FJCL State Competition in Orlando, April 9-11,2015, for the top 25 winners from Regionals.
C) National Competition: July 25-Aug. 1, 2015 at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
Dues for the Latin Club are $10. which includes dues for the Florida Junior Classical League and the National Junior
Classical League. Make checks payable to Leesburg High School and note JCL Club dues. Dues are due by Friday,
September 1. We are designing new club shirts this year, so info. to come. Student earn extra credit each month if they
wear a Latin Club or FJCL or NJCL shirt.
