As we are working with music right now you are going to analyze a song of your own choice. Think about
what kind of song you pick so it isn’t too superficial. You need to be able to analyze it and in order to do
that it needs to have some depth. The outcome of this project will be a group discussion where you
present your song and tell the others about it.
Follow these steps:
1) Choose a song you like (in English)
2) Listen to it and study the lyrics. Try to translate it as well.
3) Think about the following things and write down keywords:
Introduction
 What’s the name of the artist/group? What do you know about the background of the artist/group?
 What’s the name of the song?
 When was it recorded?
 To what genre does the song belong?
 Why have you chosen to analyze this song? Why do you like it?
 What feeling do you get when you hear the song? Why?
Lyrics








What is the song about?
Does the song have a special theme? What?
Describe the intro. How does it start? Is it a good beginning? Why / Why not?
Do you like the ending of the song? Why / Why not?
Does the song seem to repeat common themes or phrases?
Can you find any metaphors, similes or figurative language? Give examples and try to explain them.
Are they important to the song?
How does the artist/group describe people or places? What words are used?
Which is your favorite part of the lyrics?
Message
 Do you think the song is written for a special kind of audience? Who?
 What do you think the artist/group wants to tell us with this song? Give examples from the lyrics.
 Why do you think the song is made? Is it to make us think, to entertain us or something completely
different?
Language
 Choose ten words from the song and find some synonyms.
 Choose ten words and find some opposites.
 Choose five regular verbs and write them in all three forms.
 Choose five irregular verbs and write them in all three forms.
 Choose five regular nouns and write them in singular and plural form.
 Choose two irregular nouns and write them in singular and plural form.
 Choose five regular adjectives and compare (komparera) them.
 Choose two irregular adjectives and compare (komparera) them.
 Choose ten new words and translate them into Swedish.
4) Prepare yourself for the presentation/discussion so you know what to say.
5) Put the lyrics and a picture of the artist/group in a document and send it to the rest
of your group.
6) Have the presentation/discussion:

 Present and talk about the song. Include the parts with the introduction, the lyrics and the
