Eight Unifying Themes
of Biology (plus two)
1) New properties emerge at each level in the biological hierarchy (pair)
2) Organisms interact with other organisms and the physical environment
3) Life requires energy transfer and transformation
4) Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization
5) The cell is an organism’s basic unit of structure and function
6) The continuity of life is based on heritable information in the form of DNA
7) Feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems
8)
Evolution – the Overarching Theme of Biology (pair)
9) In studying nature, scientists make observations & then form and test hypotheses (pair)
10) Science benefits from a cooperative approach and diverse viewpoints (pair)
You are expected to develop and deliver a presentation to the class,
which explains and illustrates one of these themes.
PRESENTATIONS SHOULD:
 Last for 10-15 minutes
 Include a visual component (Prezi or Powerpoint), as well as an interactive component
for your classmates (be creative!)
 Use the Campbell textbook as a guide for information & presentation, but also include
material drawn from at least two other cited resources
 Handouts or other prepared materials for the audience are strongly encouraged
 Be turned in electronically, in rough draft, to Mr. Huff by Friday, Aug. 9
 Be finalized, rehearsed, and ready for delivery to the class by Monday, Aug. 12
