Materials Needed:
The texts will be provided for you. If you would like to annotate the translations as you read,
please purchase your own copy of the Fitzgerald translation.

A Song of War: Readings from Vergil’s Aeneid, Richard LaFleur, Alexander G.

De Bello Gallico, Julius Caesar

Three-ring binder with dividers
600 sheets of college rule paper (at least)
Summer Assignment: Must be completed by Wednesday, August 15
Part I:
1. Complete the grammar, vocabulary, notes up to line 209 of Book I of the Aeneid.
Part II:
1. Read Books I, II, IV of Vergil’s Aeneid.
2. As you read, complete a summary of the sequence of events and characters in each book.
You will need this reference later for discussion, analysis papers, and tests that cover specific
chapters, so be sure to write the most important facts.
While completing your summer assignments, feel free to contact me via phone/text or email if you have

I will also be available to meet with students if anyone would like to go over the summer assignments.

Grading:
We will follow the school grading system of 90% assignments/assessments and 10% final exam. The
assignments/assessments portion of the grade will consist of vocabulary and translation quizzes, weekly
lines assigned, book summaries, tests, and projects.
Assessments will follow the format of the AP test, but on a smaller scale. Each assessment will contain
multiple choice questions pertaining to the grammar, rhetoric, meter, and translation of a variety of
prepared and sight passages; short essay questions about the language/rhetoric/style of a passage or a
comparison of passages; and translation of prepare passages.
