Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum vs. Trident Tropical Twist
QUESTION
Which gum has more sugar, Dubble Bubble or Trident Tropical Twist?
HYPOTHESIS
Form a hypothesis about the sugar content of the 2 different types of gum tested? How might they vary? Explain your
reasoning.
PRE-LAB
C6H12O6(s) + O2(g) CO2(g) + H2O(l)
1. Balance the reaction shown above.
2. What is the molar mass of sugar (C6H12O6)?
3. According to the nutritional information, each piece of gum has a mass of 6g with 5g of sugar. Using this
information, what percent of the gum is sugar by mass?
%sugar = (mass of sugar/mass gum) x 100%
MATERIALS
-
1 piece of Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum with wrapper
1 piece of Trident Tropical Twist with wrapper
Electronic balance
PROCEDURE
1. Unwrap one piece of Dubble Bubble bubble gum. Do NOT throw away the wrapper.
2. Place the wrapper on the electronic balance.
3. Record the mass of the wrapper in the data table below.
4. Press the “Zero” button on the balance. The electronic balance should read 0.0g after you have pressed this button.
5. Place your unwrapped piece of Dubble Bubble on the wrapper on the electronic balance.
6. Record the mass of the piece of Dubble Bubble bubble gum in the data table below.
7. Chew the gum for several minutes until you believe that all of the sugar has been dissolved by your saliva.
8. Place the chewed gum in the wrapper.
9. Using the electronic balance, weigh the wrapper and the chewed gum.
10. Record the mass of wrapper and chewed gum in the data table below.
11. Repeat steps 1 – 10 using Trident Tropical Twist gum.

5.
6.
7.
Calculate the mass of the chewed Dubble Bubble bubble gum.
Calculate the mass of sugar in the Dubble Bubble bubble gum.
Calculate the moles of sugar found in your original piece of Dubble Bubble bubble gum.
Calculate the mass of the chewed Trident Tropical Twist bubble gum.
Calculate the mass of sugar in the Trident Tropical Twist bubble gum.
Calculate the moles of sugar found in your original piece of Trident Tropical Twist bubble gum.
Calculate the percent mass of sugar in your original piece of Dubble Bubble bubble gum.
%sugar = (mass of sugar/mass gum) x 100%
8. Calculate your percent error for the mass of sugar you determined in Dubble Bubble compared to the
theoretical mass of sugar supposedly found in Dubble Bubble (5g).
%error = |actual yield-theoretical yield|/theoretical yield x 100%
REACTION CLASSIFICATION
C6H12O6(s)  CO2(g) + H2O(l)
Answer the following questions in paragraph form:
1. Referring to the reaction equation written above, as your saliva breaks down the sugar in the gum, is that a
physical or chemical reaction?
2. What were any indicators that you observed that helped you determine whether the above reaction is a physical
or chemical reaction?
3. Referring to the reaction equation written above, if the reaction is a chemical reaction, what type of chemical
reaction is it and how do you know?
CONCLUSION
Answer the following questions in paragraph form:
