Description of Course: Students enrolled in English III will continue to increase and refine
both verbal and written communication skills. Using available technology, high school students
are expected to plan, draft, and complete written (computer-generated), error-free compositions
for a variety of purposes. English III students will extensively read and analyze multiple genres
from multi-ethnic world literature. This is a differentiated curriculum to better serve exceptional
needs, and it provides opportunities for students to be self-directed on highly individualized
learning experiences involving enrichment activities. Students enrolled in English I-IV will be
required to write a research paper. (Course Selection Catalog; Grades 9-12) There will be
required summer reading.
All English III students will study the following units:

Plagiarism is the undocumented and/or unauthorized use of another person’s work. Simply
put, if you did not write it, draw it, compose it, design it, make it, or create it in any way – it is
not yours to use without documenting the source. If you plagiarize, you will receive 0 points
for that activity and may face additional disciplinary consequences. LHS’ policy on
plagiarism is simple: Don’t do it! Cheating (copying homework, sharing answers during
exams) will be handled in a like manner.
Late/Makeup Work: Without prior approval from me, ten points will be deducted for each
day an assignment is late. Assignments must be submitted within three days after the due date.
(Saturday and Sunday are counted in the allowed three days.) Students who miss tests will be
allowed to take an alternate exam for full credit (with an excused absence).
Homework: Students may complete homework at least once per week. Homework may
include outside reading assignments.
Class Expectations:
Students are expected to
1) Attend class and be on time.
2) Be prepared to learn and perform your best.
3) Be respectful at all times.
4) Address all teachers and peers appropriately. 5) Not use profanity.
Personal Technology: Unless otherwise stated, all personal technology devices are prohibited
in class to include cell phones, mobile music devices, headphones, etc. These devices will be
confiscated and students may incur a $15 fine to retrieve their devices.
Academic Language: We will speak (and write) professionally. As young adults in my
class, you will be challenged to speak as such. We will speak (and write) in grammatically
correct terms. Your ability to apply relevant vocabulary during your oral participation will be
rewarded in your daily participation grades. Profanity is absolutely prohibited!
Student Dress Code: See your Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct
Attendance Policy: See your Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct
