Spanish 1: reg. conjugations; pronouns
Jeannette Fuhriman- Jan.27, 2015
Objective: Students will correctly identify all personal pronouns on a pop quiz, conjugate
regular –AR, -ER, and –IR verbs, and practice conjugating them in short sentences of 5 or
more words.
Cognitive goal: Students will score well on the personal pronouns pop quiz and be able to
conjugate regular –AR, -ER, and –IR verbs in short sentences.
Social/affective goal: Students who understand regular conjugations will teach their peers how to
conjugate, and those who struggle with conjugations will learn from their peers as they practice
conjugating in pairs.
Linguistic: Students will demonstrate a knowledge of regular conjugations and personal pronouns
via a written pop quiz, talking in pairs, and creating original conjugatedsentences of 5 words or
more.
Assessment Objectives: Students will be able to successfully identify personal pronouns on the
pop quiz and I will also assess their understanding of regular conjugations during the conjugations
practice and by asking for original conjugated sentences using regular verbs off their verb lists.
Materials needed: Calentamiento on overhead (below), pop quiz, list of practice sentences
(below), “Conjugations Back” YouTube link (http://youtu.be/4Ex3k3yKjYk), homework copies
1) Calentamiento y sellos (25 min)
- Make sure to review subject pronouns well to prepare them for pop quiz
2) Bienvenida (10 min)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------3) Review the difference between Tú, VOSOTROS, UD.,UDS. (5 min)
-
Briefly recap the difference between these forms by asking students for pesos and
expanding on their answers. (vosotros=you my really good friend in Spain)
4) POP QUIZ (15 min)
-
Clear desks and take POP QUIZ. I want them to get this, so they can retake it for full
credit as many times as they need within the next 2 weeks, but don’t tell them until
afterwards because I want them to pay attention during the review.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5) Conjugations Back (5 min)
-
Watch “Conjugations Back” YouTube video (http://youtu.be/4Ex3k3yKjYk) to review –AR
verb conjugations. Fun song to help them remember endings.
6) –AR Conjugation review on board (10 min)
-
Put 5 regular –AR verbs on the board (mirar, bailar, estudiar, practicar, hablar) and
ask for volunteers to conjugate them. As I review them, have them bounce the rhythm
with me to help them feel the rhythm and see where the stress falls for each conjugation.
7) –AR Conjugation practice in pairs (10 min)
- Put up 6 sentences with regular –AR verb conjugations on overhead (below) and with a
partner, be able to say all 5 sentences correctly. As soon as they think they are ready, they
raise their hands and I randomly quiz them on 2 sentences each. Both students must be
able to conjugate the sentences I ask for in order for anyone to get pesos. If their partner
doesn’t understand one of the sentences, they are allowed to explain it to them in English.
Have the first 3 partnerships to finish help me quiz the rest of the class as they raise their
hands to keep things moving.

8) –ER, -IR verb pattern introduction (5 min)
-
Show students the conjugation of a regular –er verb that they already are familiar with
(comer), underlining the ending. Ask students for the pattern (-ar has endings that start
with an “a”; -er verbs have the same ending except with an “e”. Then a regular –ir verb
(vivir) and have them notice that the only two differences between –er and –ir are in the
nosotros and vosotros forms.
9) –ER, -IR verbs conjugation practice in pairs
-
Repeat #7, except with –er, -ir verb sentences (below) (two rounds- 1 for –er; 1 for –ir))
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------10)
Rubber band activity:
- Ask students to make up their own sentences using regular verbs off their verb lists for
pesos. 5 words or longer for each sentence. Try not to repeat verbs (or at least not verbs
and conjugations)
11)
Tarea: Write down 12 sentences of 5 words or more on the worksheet below: 4 –ar
verb sentences, 4 –er verb sentences, and 4 –ir verb sentences using the guidelines on the
worksheet.
Adaptations: There are currently no students with IEPs enrolled in these Spanish 1
courses, but for students who have vision issues, the images projected can be made
a little larger by zooming in. Making sure that these students sit closer to the front of
the classroom will also help. None of these activities should be an issue for slower or
faster learners because they can work at their own pace. If there were students who
needed more time for the test, they could sit outside in the hall to finish while I review
the answers with the class. The activity practicing conjugations in partners ensures
that both students are learning and depending on the class, it might be beneficial to
pair students who are slower learners with slightly quicker learners so that they have
a peer to help explain things to them if they are confused.
