6th Grade Syllabus for the 2015-2016 School Year
Monte Vista Middle School
(951)654-9361
Welcome to Monte Vista Middle School! We’re looking forward to an exciting year of successful experiences. The following is an
outline of what to expect in 6th grade. Please read this over with a parent tonight and bring the signed portion back to your
advisory teacher.
Restroom: Students are provided 4 minute passing periods between classes and that is the time they should to take care of
personal business. We understand that emergencies arise and there are exceptions, but we want you in class as much as possible.
Homework: Homework is assigned ON MOST DAYS to reinforce academic skills taught in school. It will be given on a regular basis
and will be posted on the board as well as on the website. Parents should create an Aeries account to check student progress and
grades. Missing homework will lower your report card grade. After school tutoring will be required if homework is consistently
missing. It is your responsibility to inform your parents if you are to serve tutoring or detention time.
Grading:
All 6th grade core classes will use the following weighting in final grades:
Classwork: 40%
Homework: 10%
Quizzes/Tests: 25%
Unit Assessments: 25%
All assignments will be graded on a point system. The following point scale will be used:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 0-59%
Assessments:
Tests, quizzes, and other assignments will be given on a regular basis in all classes. Please prepare for all assessments. In addition
to classroom assessments there will be 2 district performance tasks in core classes along with the state testing (SBAC) in the spring.
Absences: Consistent attendance is a must. When you are not in class, you miss notes, discussions, assignments, labs, and
activities. If you must miss a day, it is your responsibility to copy the missed assignment(s) from the board, get any necessary
paperwork, and complete your assignment(s). You will have 1 day for every day you were out to turn in the missing work.
Progress Reports: Progress reports will be mailed home once every quarter. Other times during the quarter, progress reports will
be printed out and given to students directly every few weeks. Progress reports can be made available by request at any time.
Late Work: Progress reports are given out every few weeks showing assignments that have been missed. Late work will be
accepted, but will have a point reduction imposed (See individual teachers for the exact point reduction).
Parent Portal: Aeries.net Parent Portal is the means through which parents can access their student’s grades, attendance,
assignments, transcripts, etc. from their home or office. Further instructions will be given to set up your account.
Remind: Many teachers have a Remind account. This is a one-way communication tool for parents and students. You will get
reminders about assignments and tests and quizzes as well as important school information. Individual teachers will give you
specific directions on how to sign up for these convenient reminders.
