Plankton are all
of the creatures
in the sea which
rely on the tides
to move them
from place to
place.
Types of Plankton
ZOOPLANKTON
PHYTOPLANKTON
 Animals
 Plants
 Tiny Fish and Krill
 Algae and Diatoms
 Phytoplankton
 Photosynthesis
 Deeper parts of the water
 Close to the Surface
Nekton
Nekton are
all of the
animals in
the ocean
that are able
to swim on
their own,
without the
help of the
tides

Mandarin Fish
BENTHOS
Benthos are
animals
which live at
the bottom of
the sea in the
Benthic
Zone.
Benthos
The main food source of benthos are plankton, as well as
organic runoff from land. The depth of water, temperature
and salinity, and type of local substrate all affect what
benthos is present.
There are several different types of benthos:
 Macrobenthos
 Meiobenthos
 Microbenthos
Benthos can also be categorized by their eating habits. There
are both Zoobenthos, and Phytobenthos
Benthos
Epibenthos
Live on top of the sediment on the sea floor
Hyperbenthos
Live just above the sediment on the sea floor
