The Cuba Project—The BCTF has been offering professional-development workshops in Cuba for 10 years,
focused on pedagogy for teaching English as an additional language. BCTF members with experience in secondlanguage teaching offer these workshops in conjunction with the Cuban teachers’ union (SNTECD). Future
involvement may include offering English support for union officials.
The Peru Project—In the summer of 2008, the BCTF sent the first team of teachers to Peru to offer a similar
opportunity for Peruvian teachers. Like the Cuba Project, the workshops focus on pedagogy for teaching English
as an additional language. The program was expanded over the following summers, pairing BCTF members with
experience in second-language teaching with Peruvian teachers to offer these workshops in conjunction with
SUTEP, the Peruvian teachers’ union.
Canada World Youth (CWY) is a world leader in developing international educational programs for young people
aged 15 to 29. A non-profit organisation, CWY is dedicated to enriching the lives of young people that have a
desire to become informed and active global citizens, helping youth experience the world for themselves, learn
about other cultures and diverse Canadian communities while developing leadership and communication skills.
The CWY program advocates learning by doing, a model in which young volunteers learn by getting involved in
communities in Canada and in another country. CWY is one of the few organizations in the world that offers a
two-part program, with one phase in Canada and the other in another country, providing perspective on how
people live in both countries and fosters true dialogue between partners in the South and in the North.
CoDevelopment Canada is a BC–based NGO that works for social change and global education in the Americas.
CoDev fosters partnerships between civil society groups in Canada, and their counterparts in Latin America.
These partnerships educate Canadians about Latin America and allow them to directly support the region. Such
connections build solidarity, mutual understanding and ultimately improve prospects for a fairer global order.
Volunteering with CoDev is an excellent way to donate your time and show your support for global justice.
Committed volunteers contribute through general office support, assisting with communications and
fundraising, translation and interpretation (occasional), professional services: computer technical, legal,
financial, communications, fundraising, outreach at events and conferences, event planning, Café Ético
volunteering—preparing/ delivering coffee orders; outreach to promote fair trade.
CUSO-VSO is a civil society development agency that works through volunteers. We send Canadians and
Americans abroad to work on collaborative development projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the
Caribbean.
Tools in CUSO-VSO's development toolbox include:
 Long-term overseas volunteering—Professional placements for up to two years.
 Short-term specialist assignments—Positions of six months and under for highly experienced professionals
who provide support at senior levels.
 Developing world 'National Volunteering'—Support for in-country volunteering, helping people contribute
to the development of their own communities.
 Diaspora communities volunteering—Support for people interested in using their skills in their countries of
birth or heritage.
 Development partnerships—Strategic alliances with select business partners, and tri-party linkages among
organizations in the developing world and like-minded groups in North America.
 LINKS (Learning through International Networking and Knowledge Sharing)—A program that gives partner
groups the chance to go to another country to learn and share best practices.

5. Education Beyond Borders
http://www.educationbeyondborders.org/
Education Beyond Borders is a non-profit, non-denominational NGO devoted to closing the education divide
through teacher professional development and community education. Our organization focuses on the building
of teacher leaders. We work primarily, but not exclusively, in developing countries, in order to build selfreliance, health, and capacity.
Education Beyond Borders assembles teams of teachers to work on developing best educational practices
teacher workshops based on the destination country’s curricula. Areas of focus are Mathematics, Science,
Information Technology, and Health education at the grades 6 to 9 levels.
6. Education Without Borders
http://www.educationwithoutborders.ca/
Education without Borders (EwB) aims to provide improved educational opportunities and facilities in
disadvantaged regions of the world. Formed in 2002 in Vancouver and granted charitable status in 2003, EwB
believes that the development of knowledge and skills gives individuals greater control over their lives and more
possibilities and choices for their future.
EwB is seeking volunteers for exciting, fulfilling, and demanding volunteer positions at Fezeka Senior Secondary
in Guguletu, Cape Town, South Africa. EwB is looking for volunteers who will serve either as project managers
and/or as teachers. A commitment of one year is desirable.
Volunteers are key to the work WUSC does in developing countries. You can choose from:
 Uniterra—see below
 Students Without Borders™—an initiative that offers university and college students exciting volunteer
learning opportunities in a developing country during an academic term.
 Leave for Change—enables employees from participating organizations to transform part of their annual
leave into a 2 or 3 week volunteer assignment in a developing country.
 International Seminar—Each summer 20 post-secondary students from across Canada join 20 students
from the global South for the International Seminar, a unique six-week overseas educational experience that
will change your life.
In addition, WUSC also recruits a small number of cooperants for our Haiti Volunteer Cooperation Program.

8. Uniterra
http://www.uniterra.ca/uniterra/en/index.html
Uniterra is an international cooperation programme of CECI and WUSC, mobilizing partners, volunteers, and the
Canadian public to reduce world poverty by 50%, by 2015.
We foster partnerships between organisations and networks in Canada and in the South. Through volunteer
cooperation, we support the mobilization of communities so that they may actively participate in development.
Uniterra's partners and volunteers are presently engaged in projects on three continents in the following six
sectors: Agriculture and Rural Development, HIV and AIDS, Basic Education, Health and Nutrition, Private Sector
Development, and Youth Programming.
