Design Your Own Lab
In this project you will be creating your own lab to answer a question related to the Mix and Flow of
Matter Unit.
Your project will require:
1. Testable question
2. Hypothesis
 If [manipulated variable] … then [what you expect to happen] … because [use scientific
reasoning to explain]
3. Variables
 Manipulated Variable: What are you changing?
 Responding Variable: What are you trying to find out? (Hint: look at the lab question)
 Controlled Variable: What are you keeping constant (or the same) throughout the
experiment... there should be lots (at least 3)!
4. Materials
 What will you be using in the lab, list everything
5. Procedure
 Step by step instructions to follow when conducting the lab
o Think back to the “Making a Peanut Butter Sandwich Lesson”, be very detailed
and direct in your instructions
6. Observations
 Must include a table including
o Detailed scientific title
o Qualitative or quantitative data (which will help you answer your lab question
better?)
7. Analysis
 Use your observations to answer the lab question
 Include scientific theory/reasoning from class (or research) to help support your
observations
 What is one improvement you would make to your lab? Why?
 Connection to the real world – how would you use this information in manufacturing, or
design?
8. Conclusion
 One sentence that answers your testable question
Remember to avoid “touchy feely words”
