Money WebQuest:
Introduction:
Do you love to shop! Mathematics is important for you in your
daily shopping life.
In class, we have been talking about addition, subtraction, and
multiplying of decimals. Also, we have been adding, subtracting,
and multiplying money amounts. Finally, we have been working
on story problems dealing with money.
Now you will have an opportunity to become a shopper and
buy your own personal items that you need with a limit
amount of money. You will find resources to review adding,
subtracting, and multiplying decimals and money amounts,
make change, and count money. Also, I want you to be able
to use this concepts throughout your lives.
Task:
Hello Shoppers, your goal in this Webquest is to become experts in
counting money, making change, adding, subtracting, and multiplying
money, knowing the names of specific coins, and being able to
recognize the different bill and coins, and budgeting your money. In
order to accomplish this goal, you will have a variety of resources to
help you. You will be searching internet websites, looking in your
notes from class, and using money manipulatives. At the end, you
will design a PowerPoint Presentation with a story problem you
created using addition and subtraction to present in class.
I will give you a specific amount of money that you can spend on
clothing, shoes, school supplies, or any other items for yourself. You
will then go to stores or go on store websites to find things you want to
buy for yourself. You will add the prices up as you go along. If you go
over the amount I give you, you must subtract the items that make you
go over the limit and find something that is less money. Try to buy as
many things as possible and get as close to the limit of money as you
can. BE A SMART SHOPPER. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON
ONLY TWO OR THREE ITEMS.
You will be making a shopping budget list. This will consist of all the
items you are buying, how many of the items, and the costs with a grand
total. Use the shopping budget list at the bottom of this page.
Process:
Step 1: First you will review the basic concepts of adding and subtracting
decimals and money, making change, and counting money. Then review the
final assignment on creating a PowerPoint presentation.
Step 2:
Choose a website to practice counting money

Step 3: You have a budget of $150.00 dollars to spend on yourself.
a) Budget List. You will keep a budget list of all the items you want to buy.
You will use stores online to buy your items, but you may use
advertisements (television, paper, etc.), or when you go shopping with your
parents. Write the names of the specific items, prices, quantity, and total
amount for each specific item on your list. Here are some store sites you

Browse Google for your favorite shopping stores; just type in the store
name.
b) Calculations. On a separate sheet, you will need to keep a wellorganized record of all your work of adding and subtracting money and
making change. There is a minimum limit of 10 items you must try to
purchase on this list. Be a smart shopper. Do not spend all your money
on two or three items. Manage your money wisely to purchase as many
items as you can.
Step 4:
Lastly, you will use what you have learned to create a story problem using a
four-slide PowerPoint. You will write this story problem on a storyboard,
solve it, and write a short summary of what you learned/feedback. You
will create your PowerPoint Presentation as follows:
Slide One: Title Page
Slide Two: Create a real world story problem using two items from your
budget list.
Slide Three: Write down each step to solving your problem.
Slide Four: Answer the following three questions:
1. Did you like WebQuest? Why or why not?
2. Would you like to go on WebQuest again?
