• Ex: Puerto Rico is located between the island of the Hispaniola and
U.S Virgin islands.

Location of Puerto Rico
• Cartography - Is the study and art of making maps. Maps are visual
models, or illustrations of a place.
• Absolute location - locating a place using the system of parallels and
meridians.
• In order to draw the exact location of all countries in the world cartographers
use a system of parallels or lines of latitude and meridians or lines of
longitudes.
• Example: Puerto Rico’s absolute location is latitude 18.5 degrees north and
longitude 66 degrees west.

Parallels = Latitude
 are horizontal lines that stretch around the earth from east to west
Meridian = Longitude
 are vertical lines that run from North Pole to South Pole
Equator
divides the Earth in 2 equal parts. Divides northern and southern hemispheres. It is
define as 0 degrees of latitude.
Greenwich Meridian or Prime Meridian
Divides the planet into 2 hemispheres (Eastern and Western). It is define as 0
degrees of longitude.

The Climate of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico’s location prevents the seasons.
• Climate varies across the planet because of the inclination of the

• Some regions in the planet do not receive as much sunlight as the
others during some months of the year.
• Those who not receive direct sunrise all year long experiment
seasons. They are located in the temperate zones.

In Puerto Rico
• Season are not as different from each other.
• This because P.R is located in the tropical zone, where the sun shines
all year long.
• However temperatures are:
• higher in the summer specially in July and August
• cooler in the winter mostly in January and February.
• In may to October we have rainy season.
• It rains more in the north because the Cordillera Central acts as a
block that the humid air from the Atlantic Ocean.
