The Cold War
1945-1991
What is the Cold War
• It was an intense rivalry between the
United States and Russia – between West
and East and between capitalism and
communism that dominated the years
following WW II.
Words of Wisdom
• Winston Churchill;
“Germany is finished.
The real problem is
Russia. I can’t get
Americans to see it.”
-- 1945
Cold vs. Hot
• It is called the
“Cold” War
because there was
never any direct
attacks made by
the U.S. or Soviet
Union on each
other.
FDR dies; Truman Takes Command
• FDR died on April 12, 1945
• Truman, his Vice President
for only a few months,
became the leader of our
country
Conflicting Postwar Goals
• Americans: wanted democracy and economic
opportunities for the countries of Europe and Asia
• Soviets: Wanted to rebuild their nation in order to
protect their own interests. They wanted to
establish satellite nations, countries controlled by
the Soviets along the western boundaries of the
Soviet Union. Stalin wanted to overthrow
capitalism around the world and install
Communist governments.

Despite Stalin’s promise to
allow their Eastern European
territories to establish their
own government all those
countries were still under their
control and had become
satellite states of the USSR.
Wartime Alliance Unravels/ Iron Curtain
Because Stalin refused to allow his
Eastern European countries to be
free the Cold War began between the
U.S. & the Soviet Union. Churchill
stated that an “iron curtain” had
fallen over Europe and that Stalin’s
communist oppressive regime would
spread if not stopped.

Containment/ The Marshall Plan
Kennan developed the idea of
containment or containing
communism. George Marshall
proposed aid be given to war-torn
European countries to help them
rebuild their economies. The
Marshall Plan gave aid to
Germany and Italy and other
European countries to help
increase trade and get them back
on their feet and was very
successful.
The Berlin Airlift
Stalin wanted to take West
Berlin and blockade the
city. In order to make sure
they were supplied the
U.S. & Britain airlifted
their goods to them for
over a year.
The Formation of NATO/ Warsaw Pact
The U.S., Canada and 12
Western European countries
formed NATO in 1949 on the
basis of collective security or
that each member would
defend the other if they were
attacked. The Soviet Union
responded by creating the
Warsaw Pact with its Eastern
European satellites in 1955.

What events led to the “temporary” division of Korea? The end of WWII and the fact
that Japan had controlled Korea led to the division of Korea at the 38th Parallel between
Soviet back North Korea and U.S. backed South Korea.
•
How did the Korean War begin? When American troops left S. Korea, N. Korea attacked
on June 25, 1950 and took Seoul.

launched an attack on Inchon and pushed N. Korea back past the 38th Parallel.

Arms Race/ Massive Retaliation
The dropping of the atomic bomb lead to
the “arms race”. 1952 the U.S. developed
the hydrogen bomb. The Soviet Union
exploded its first hydrogen bomb a year
later. The nuclear weapons were to act as
a deterrent: if the Soviet attacked us we
would attack them. This was known as
mutual mass destruction.
Rosenberg Trial/ Venona Papers
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were
charged with selling national secrets
to the Soviet Union about the atomic
bomb. Rosenberg were found guilty
and executed for spying. Many
Americans doubted their guilt;
however, the Venona Papers revealed
the identities of several Americans
who had spied for the Soviet Union
including the Rosenberg's.
Space Race/ Sputnik
1957 the Soviet Union launched the first
man-made satellite into space. Sputnik.
Sputnik ushered in a new age of space
exploration and started a “space race”. It
raised fears that the Soviet Union might
use missiles to send nuclear bombs to the
U.S.

House Un-American Activities Committee
After WWII Americans feared
communism and the Loyalty Review
Boards was created to investigate
individual “un-American” activities”
such as participating in the Communist
Party. Congress conducted its only
loyalty checks through its HAAC.
Those identified as present or former
members of the Communist Party were
blacklisted and lost their jobs. Alger
Hiss was prosecuted for perjury.
McCarthyism
Joseph McCarthy shocked Americans by
claiming he knew the names of hundreds
of Communist who had infiltrated the
U.S. government. After 3 years of
hearings McCarthy never provided any
real proof of his chargers. He was
formally criticized by the Senate. His
witch-hunt frightened many Americans.
McCarthyism has become identified with
making harsh accusations without
evidence.
