Feudalism= the SOCIAL bonds and oaths that set up
relationships of power/loyalty/and protection in
Medieval Europe
Subinfeudation= In the system of Feudalism, it was
possible for a person to be a lord and a vassal at the
same time…led to conflicts such as the Hundred
Years War between France and England…

3. Define Lay Investiture, who were the key
figures fighting for and against it? What was
the resolution to the conflict?
Lay Investiture= when a political leader (not part
of the church hierarchy or “lay person”) appoints
church officials (such as bishops)…Key figures
were Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII…Henry IV as
Holy Roman Emperor appointed Bishops (for their
loyalty)…Pope Gregory VII said only church
officials (like the Pope) could appoint church
officials…scathing letter from Henry IV to Pope G
VII…Pope G VII excommunicated Henry
IV…eventually forgiven, but controversy not
resolved until successors with Concordat of
Worms…church appoints, lay people can give
titles/lands, etc.
