Lesson Four - Absolute Value Equations and Inequalities
When you go grocery shopping and buy a 10-pound bag of potatoes, do you think it truly weighs
exactly 10 pounds? When a company packages a 10-pound bag of potatoes they cannot always
get the exact weight of 10 pounds. So what are their boundaries? Do you think you would ever
but a "10 pound" bag of potatoes that is truly 3 pounds or 20 pounds? Is it more likely that a bag
could weight about 9.5 pounds or maybe 11.5? What if each bag can vary at most 2 pounds in
either direction? Companies can create an absolute value inequality that represents the
acceptable weights of a "10 pound" bag of potatoes or an absolute value inequality the
represents the unacceptable weights of a "10 pound" bag of potatoes. The solutions to these
statements would help companies know if they are putting too many potatoes in a bag, not
enough, or an acceptable amount.
In this lesson you will learn how to solve a absolute value equations and inequalities by rewriting
the equations and inequalities to become equations or compound inequalities.
