Reading Chapter 14.1, War in the West
Overview: By 1850, most American Indians (approximately 360,000) lived west of the
Mississippi River. These settlers were drawn by the prospect of land, railroad, construction
work, the cattle boom, gold and silver. The American Indians both nomadic and settled were
pushed on to reservations and expected to assimilate, given empty promises, and marginal
diminishing land. Many Plains Indians including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Sioux
refused to live on reservations and faced opposition of white settlers and prospectors
supported by the American Army.
