Project-Based Learning
■ TK and Kindergarten students have been working on a literacy unit around Eric Carle’s
The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Students have learned their days of the week, numbers,
and food. They have created created their own caterpillars, labeled numbers, days, and
foods, and even wrote an opinion piece about what they would choose to eat if they were
a caterpillar.
■ First and Second Graders have been working on animal research projects. Students are
gathering information about an animal of their choice. They are categorizing the
information based on the animal’s body, food, habitats, family, and actions. Students
will write informational pieces that teach others as well as include expository diagrams.
■ Third Graders have just completed a Life Science unit that included animal and plant
adaptations, and Earth’s biomes. Students researched a specific biome and taught
others about the biome’s animals, plants, landforms, climate, and changes.
■ Fourth Graders have just completed a unit on Native Americans. They read and
responded from a number of different sources. We utilized information from
discoveryeducation.com, online.kidsdiscover.com, raz-kids.com, and readworks.org
Classroom to Classroom Connection
■ We are in constant communication with your child’s general education teacher!
– At the TK and Kindergarten level, we are supporting the colors, letters, and sight
words of the week here in ELD too.
– We plan lessons using raz-kids.com alongside the First and Second Grade teachers,
focusing on specific phonetic patterns and reading comprehension skills.
– Phonics lessons in ELD are aligned to current SRA spelling units that Third Grade
students use in their general education classroom.
– Science and Social Studies projects are connected to current units of study for Third
and Fourth Graders who come to ELD twice a day.
– Wordly Wise Vocabulary lessons are taught in ELD to support learning in the Fourth
Grade classrooms.
Report Card Grade for ELs
英語語言發展
■ General Education teachers provided grades for your children by compiling pieces of
data from a variety of sources. The ELD teacher provided grades for students who
attend ELD. Teachers used these grades as one piece of data when formulating final
report card grades.
■ ELD Grading System:
– EM Emerging 萌芽期: typically used for students who score 1-2 on the CELDT. These
students are Beginner-Early Intermediate ELs whose English language skills are
continuing to emerge.
– EX Expanding 擴展期: typically used for students who score 3 on the CELDT. These
students are Intermediate level ELs whose language skills are expanding and
progressing.
– BR Bridging 接軌期: typically used for students who score 4-5 on the CELDT. These
students are Early Advanced-Advanced ELs whose language skills are approaching or
meeting grade level standards.
