Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father’s name was Ondrej Varhola and the mother’s name is Julia. Andy was the fourth child, the first born child died earlier at their homeland soon after they relocated to the U.S. Andy had two older brothers John born in 1925 and Paul born in 1923. Andy grew up a Catholic through his families religious beliefs.

Andy’s parents were working class emigrants from Mikova, Slovakia during the

Hungarian Empire Andy’s father immigrated to the United States in 1914 and the mother soon after joined him 1921 after the death of Andy’s Grandparents. In Andy’s elementary schools days he developed Sydenham’s chorea a nervous system disease that cause involuntary movements of the extremes, which also cause skin pigmentation blotchiness. With all this happening to Andy’s he became fearful of doctors and hospitals and Andy became a hypochondriac. As a bed ridden child Andy was a outcast at school and developed a tight bond with his mother. Andy’s father died in an accident when he was 13 years old.

Andy graduated from Schenley High School in 1945 and pursued his education to become an art teacher he enrolled in University of Pittsburgh, in the middle of the process

Andy’s mind changed and he enrolled in Carnegie Institute of Technology to become an commercial illustrator. Andy worked up to his bachelor degree in Fine Arts in Graphic Design in

1949.

Andy became a artist of screen printmaking and using silks screens to develop everyone of his paintings. In the 1950’s he held exhibits the Hugo Gallery and the Bodley Gallery in New

York City and in California. Andy started having successful galleries in the July 9, 1962 Andy held another gallery by the name of Ferus Gallery and the gallery was dedicated to West Coast

Pop Art. The works included Marilyn diptych, 100 soup cans, 100 coke bottles and 100 dollar bills.

During his career of Art in 1960’s Andy developed many different Iconic American objects such as dollar bills, mushroom clouds, Campbells soup cans. Celebrities as well such as

Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, Marlon Brando , Elvis Presley, and Elizabeth Taylor.

During his Modern Art exhibit opened Andy was accused for capitulating to consumerism critics felt scandalized by Warhols open embrace of market culture. A important talent Andy had was very good advertising for coke and Campbell’s tomato soup. He helped the

The American Supermarket a gallery held by Paul Bianchini’s gallery. Warhol’s painting of the

Campbells soup can sold for 6 dollars and he made 1500 dollar off of that. Andy Warhol was a great advertiser for many different companies through his artwork. On June 3, 1968 Warhol and his art critic Mario Amaya were shot by Valerie Solanas in Warhol’s studio. Solanas was an author of the book SCUM Manifesto. It was reported to be a feminist attack on males, Warhol was wounded fortunately he survived the attack.

During Warhol’s career he developed the sense of Pop Art and had everyone in awe with the creativeness of each of his creations. He was invited by the communist leader Mao Zedong and created a art piece for him in 1973. Warhol also created “Interview Magazine” and published “The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.”

Warhol was in the film business and created many movies from 1963 to 1968 Warhol made more than 60 films. Some of his top films were Chelsea Girls (1966) and was highly

popular and a successful film as well. Without the permission of DC comics Andy Warhol also created the Batman Dracula Film in 1964. Some of his other films were Bike boy, My Hustler, lonesome cowboys and Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein.

Many People describe Warhol to be the Pop Artist that changed the dimension of art.

From doing Art of celebrities and making films he also published books like A Gold Book, Wild

Raspberries, and Holy Cats. Andy Warhol wanted to be a very creative artist whether he worked with drawings, sculptures, Audio, Time capsules, television, Fashion, Performance art, theater, photography and computer editing he was the man for the job.

During one of his interviews in the 1980’s Warhol confessed that he was homosexual.

Some of his films were based on the homosexual underworld and were revealing to his sexual preference. A few of his art pieces drawn were of nude males his first works of this was rejected for being to openly gay. Warhol was recognized by the society of being one of the most talented popism artist at the time.

Warhol died in New York City February 22, 1987 from recovering from a gull bladder surgery he dose off in his sleep and never woke up due to post operative cardiac arrhythmia.

Warhols family sued the hospital for improper care of patient.

From being a successful art advertiser, publisher and artist of many kinds Warhol had made history with his unique pop art. In Pittsburgh they have a museum for all of Andy Warhols collections. Many documentaries were made of Andy Warhol:
