Please select an individual that represents 'an intelligent person'. S/he can be dead or
alive, famous or not. Remember that you will need to include a few of our sources
(readings, authors) to support your views. In your two (or more) pages, please begin by
defining YOUR meaning of what it means to be intelligent. If you want to rely on one of
our author's definition, you must set up and use the quote and explain why you agree.
What is Intelligence anyway?
This is unfathomable question. What is really intelligence and who is really intelligence?
Maybe who has highest IQ? Or maybe who got all A+ for the grade? Or maybe who train
themselves for more than 10 years to get peace in the heart? Let me tell my experience first.
When I was 15, I wasn’t happy anymore. I lost my smile. My grade was not good but not bad
as well but my parents and teachers and everyone gave a hard pressure on me about my grade.
I was almost exploded because of that pressure. I studied and studied for no reasons. They
always said it is for me but that pressure made my life really hard and I could feel something
is wrong with everyone. My dream was to become a happiest person in the world, not to get
a highest grade in the world. And to be happy, I should do what I love to do but they asked
me for a something I hated to do. I knew that my grade won’t go up unless I like it. I might
knew it by heart but it was kind of brainwashing. Everyone said that I should study so I did. I
couldn’t say anything because everyone was doing it. If I was an intelligence person, I would
not just staying home and do what they want me to do like everyone. I think intelligence
person is a person who thinks from outside of the box and who has strong confidence about
the opinion which will never change by other people.
Thomas Edison. I respect him. He was an American inventor and businessman. He developed
many devices such as the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting,
practical electric light bulb. These inventions influenced so much on people’s life and also
influenced much on nowadays. He could invent these things because he thought outside of
the box. “There are no rules here -- we're trying to accomplish something.” “There is always
a better way.” These two quotes are by Thomas Edison. First quote is telling me about
Thomas Edison thought outside of the box. Thinking outside of the box means breaking the
rules that people made. And from second quote I think he wants to talk about there is always
better rules that people can make. People can break the rules and make a better one again. For
example, everyone goes to school and that is rule nowadays. If I think with breaking the rules
and think of better way, school and all kinds of educational building is gone but only library
left. There is not much students who is lack of knowledge. Most of the students go to
university just because to get a god job and this effects on students who truly have desire for
a knowledge. So if all schools are gone, only who wants knowledge will gain knowledge
whenever they want to and quality of people’s life will be better because people who hate
study don’t have to go to school and people who want knowledge can just get it whenever
they want to. This is just an example of thinking out side of the box. There are many rules
that we can break such as flying bicycle, video newspaper, sleep in day time and work in
night time, sofa with remote control, blanket with remote control, make a hole in bed and
sleep inside the bed and so on. Edison broke many rules and always thought outside of the
box so he is intelligence.
I read a “The story of Thomas A. Edison” by Inez Nellie Canfield McFee. This book is a
biography of Thomas Edison. In page 56-57, no fluid had been manufactured so he studied
day and night and he slept in the chair, ate in the desk for 6 weeks for studying and made
2000 of experiments on the formulas because of the ink problem. And this shows that he had
strong confidence of what he is doing and also this is thinking inside of the box because no
fluid was manufacturing at that time and he just broke it. He finally produced a solution and
finally succeeded making the autographic, one of the Edison’s inventions.
Edison was always thought from outside of the box and always had confidence of what he
was doing. He was really intelligence man.
