Uniting Church in the City’s (UCIC) Wesley Recital Series continues this
Friday 21 August with well-known Perth organist Graham Devenish performing
Sonatas 3 and 4 by A Guilmant. The performance starts at 1.00pm at UCIC Wesley
Perth.

Eighteen months in Afghanistan: The experience of two aid
workers. Vince and Sarah Mateljan have spent 18 months in Afghanistan, working
with TEAR Australia partners to improve the lives of people there. Afghanistan is
one of the most difficult places to do humanitarian aid work and their story is
compelling. They will be speaking at South Perth Uniting Church on Friday 28
August, 7.30 pm. Tickets are $10. For more information or to book tickets contact

Nedlands Uniting Church will be hosting a WXED (What has Christianity Ever
Done?) Lecture with Rev Dr Ian Robinson. It will be held on Sunday 23 August,
8.00am and 9.30am at the church. This lecture will look at education. It will also be
held on Tuesday 25 August at Trinity Residential College, Cambridge Room, 6.30pm.

Interfaith September is an opportunity for Uniting Church members to begin
conversations on how we relate to people of other faiths. Resources are provided
to guide weekly worship with written reflections on the lectionary readings for
September. Video clips featuring interviews with religious leaders of the Christian
faith and those of different faiths will reflect on the themes in the scripture readings

UnitingWorld is launching a new appeal to train Christian leaders among our
international church partners. Trained Christian leaders are equipped to teach
others; they nurture sparks that become flames. Their goal is to offer deep
engagement with the spirit and the scriptures, providing the tools for disciples to

peace in South Sudan in the days and weeks ahead. Conflict in the region has taken a
heavy toll on the world’s youngest nation, with thousands of lives lost, 1.6 million
people internally displaced, and millions more facing severe food shortages. Uniting

UnitingCare West (UCW) launched its new Fremantle Service Centre this week
over two events on Sunday 16 and Monday 17 August. UnitingCare West CEO, Sue
Ash, acknowledged and thanked Fremantle Wesley Mission and other congregations
in the area during the opening, for providing service to the community and assisting
those in need for many decades before UnitingCare West was established. To read

UnitingCare West will hold its annual Fundraising Golf Day hosted by 6PR’s Tony
McManus on Friday 2 October at the Royal Perth Golf Club. The aim of this year’s
event is to raise $70,000 for UCW’s Newpin program which is a preventative,
therapeutic program that works intensively with families facing potential or actual

UnitingWorld and Stop the Traffik invite Australian churches to join together
in prayer on Freedom Sunday, 18 October. Over the years, Freedom Sunday has
become a multi-faith event where different religious communities are setting aside a
global day of worship, prayer and action to end human trafficking. A toolkit for


Young participants in a World Council of Churches (WCC) interfaith summer
course representing Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions hope to make a strong
contribution towards dialogue in their home countries. Dialogue can break down

St Bartholomew’s Fair will be held on Sunday 23 August, 3.00pm, at St George’s
Cathedral, Perth. An evensong and procession, sung by a choir of young voices, will
be followed by a traditional Bartlemastide fair with a Ferris-wheel, food stalls, pony
rides, petting zoo and more. Funds raised will go towards Bartholomew’s House.

This year’s Sparklit Australian Christian Book of the Year is Captains of the
Soul, by Michael Gladwin. This year’s award drew strong entries from accomplished

The Taize Community recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1940,
Taizé is an ecumenical monastic order centred in Taizé, France, which brings
together young people from around the world for reflection, prayer and community
