PHI, HIPAA, Compliance, Laws & Privacy
Protected health information (PHI) is any information about health status, provision
of health care, or payment for health care that can be linked to a specific individual.
This is includes any part of a patient's medical record or payment history.
PHI is often sought out in datasets for de-identification before researchers share the
dataset publicly. When researchers remove PHI from a dataset they do so in an
attempt to preserve privacy for research participants.
HIPAA – Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
The primary goal of the law is to make it easier for people to keep health insurance,
protect the confidentiality and security of healthcare information and help the
healthcare industry control administrative costs.
FERPA – Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects
the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive
funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.
LOGOUT
Finally – it is very important to LOGOUT of your accounts for a number of
reasons such as preventing access to your personal information or printing.
