School Council
Minutes of the Meeting of Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 6:30 PM
In Attendance: Monika Hurford - principal, Rupinder Sandhu – vice principal,
Nancy Glenville, Alka Wrench, Anita Pang Hrepic, Paula Port, Patty Gurung
Karen Kwan Anderson, Angie Miller, Tanja De Jesus, Annastacia Smith

Books for Independent Reading – Jane Empey
Jane went through her Power Point Presentation – emailed to members prior to meeting.
- Student books read daily, kept in classroom, read ~5 times each
- Ask $5 000 - $20 000 spread out over a number of years
- Will have some school budget money to add to collection
- Set at $5 000 for now – will come back to it when financial decisions made

Principal's Report
Monika Hurford
Parent Council Election – we need to make an election committee this year looking ahead
to next year; short-lived role; set date; ballots (for 1st day envelops); Monika and Rupinder
on the committee and Karen will be the parent council representative; Karen and Monika to
confirm dates for to-dos prior to and after elections. To put on the nomination form: basic
duties of an elected parent member.
Open House & Barbeque – in fall with an open house; barbeque, activities, meet the
teacher; Wed. Sept. 24 (rain date Tues prior); send out invitations now; committee – Paula,
Rupinder, Stephanie, Monika, Anita; resource made by Anne Roe (Paula to find)
EQAO – feedback – worked really well @ 1 hour each day
Financial Report

This year Parent Council paid for: 4 presentations of performing arts, apples for Terry Fox,
Blue Spruce/Silver Birch, rolling crates – pizza, freezies, long jump mat.
Traditionally school council pays for grade 5 farewell ($1000) – deluxe pizza ($450), drinks,
ice dogs, school pin, photo, certificate, year-end activity (popcorn fundraising paid forTrip to
Crawford Lake); now looking at performing arts activity – need $ for bus ~$200.
Still have $17 517 – still need to pay for cookies, pizza order; leave $1000 in account to
start next year; need to spend $15 000 tonight.
Expenses: $5000 levelled books; $2500 barbeque – student meals; $2500 Xylophone;
$3750 ($3000 if school gets grant) jungle sport subsidy (cost for students to pay $10 each)
for 2 week experience (for next year) – $500 (if needed) for jungle sport deposit due now;
~$3 000 gym mural (mascot & character traitls); $170 track and field bus;

Teacher's Representative Report – Stephanie Colwell
Stephanie – thanks from Jump Rope Committee; mural request; feedback – are parents
interested in clothing for PE for students? yes
Food Co-ordinators' Report – Nancy Glenville & Annstacia Smith
Nancy & Annastacia will no longer have students at Osprey so will no longer be food
coordinators – as for future pizza sales, they suggested 1 price, all-in each week; forms in
Laura’s computer, other pointers provided
Monika formally thanked both Nancy and Annastacia for their contributions.
$44 431 incoming, $26 259 outgoing, more cookies, etc. PROFIT $16 901
New Pizza Pizza franchise for next year; Jennifer is only current volunteer available for next
year (but won’t coordinate);

Win-its? – there are enough stickers; Mrs. Vento will not be back to do them this year; will
need to find someone else to take it on
How has bussing policy change affected Osprey? More info to come; may get another bus
Kiss-and-Ride? – kindergarten kiss-and-ride makes it go faster (as opposed to only having
1)
Staffing? – hired grade 4 FE teacher; Mrs. Beck has a position at another school; Mr. Edson
to replace that day; ~7 LTO’s for next year
More portables? – no; no additional staff
Other Business

On May 15, 2014, Karen submitted Osprey’s application for a PRO Grant.
Monika is awaiting the response.
First Council Meeting of school year 2014-2015
Confirmed for Wed. Oct. 8 2014 (election Sept. 24/14). This date will be put on the
nomination form.
