The Roman Republic:

o Aeneas flees
Troy to find a
new home for
his people and
settles in Rome.
o A virgin princess
(Rea Silva) is
impregnated by
Mars (Roman god
of war) and has
two sons,
Romulus and
Remus.
And I took
care of
them…
The Roman Republic:
________________________________________________________
oRome was ruled by a
senate and the people.
No kings.
oSenate was made of
wealthy families (called
Patricians) who
appointed 2 consuls each
year.
oConsuls were the highest
authority, but shared
power and had to agree
on all decisions.

The Roman Republic:

Rome expanded across Europe
and Africa by creating
partnerships with its
conquered people.
In exchange for joining the
Roman Empire, the conquered
peoples were:
o Usually granted full
citizenship
o Given tax and legal
benefits
o Allowed to keep their
native customs and
traditions
The Roman Republic:

A series of three wars between Rome and Carthage
- (an empire across the Mediterranean Sea)
The Roman Republic:

Rome wins and captures the islands of
Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily…
The Roman Republic:

Carthage is bitter
and invades Italy.
A Carthaginian general
named Hannibal
sneaks into Italy by
crossing the Alps - (a
crazy huge mountain
range) – with his entire
army and 37 war
elephants.
The Roman Republic:
________________________________________________________
Because they’re terrifying, that’s why!
Hannibal is incredibly successful and
hands Rome several massive losses.
The Roman Republic:
________________________________________________________
Hannibal razes (completely
destroys) Roman towns
for 16 years
before Rome
decides to
attack Carthage
and he is forced
to retreat home
to help.
The Roman Republic:
________________________________________________________
Okay, seriously? A THIRD one?
Rome invades
Carthage with over
100,000 troops and
totally destroys the
city… they even
salted the earth so
that nothing could
ever grow there
again.
The Roman Republic:

Modern day
Rome
Gee, who won?

Carthage
The Roman Republic:
________________________________________________________
Romans often enslaved captured soldiers or
anyone else they didn’t find useful.
o 40% of all slaves were
captured soldiers (the rest
were debtors or criminals)
o Romans feared slave
uprisings
o Slaves took jobs from the
commoners so the people
were given food and other
benefits (Ancient-style
Welfare/ food stamps)
