EcoClean Selects Colorado River Foundation for June PROPS Program
Recipient, Program At $5K Donation Mark
With EPA Deeming Perc, Chemical Used in Traditional Dry Cleaning, to be Likely
Human Carcinogen, Now is the Time to Move to Eco-Friendly Garment Cleaning
Austin, TX (PRWEB) June 06, 2012
Austin, TX, June 6, 2012 – EcoClean is proud to announce its tenth PROPS program
nonprofit partner, The Colorado River Foundation (CRF). Starting today and every
Wednesday in the month of June, 5% of all sales at EcoClean will go to CRF, a
nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of the Texas
Colorado River. EcoClean is an Austin-local brand committed to community
involvement in a number of ways including this PROPS program which has given
nearly $5,000 to nine different local non profits.
In February, the EPA classified Perc (Tetrachloroethylene), the chemical used in
70% of dry cleaning, as a likely human carcinogen. Additionally, Perc is the primary
contaminant in over half of our country’s Superfund sites (hazardous waste sites on
the EPA’s National Priority List based on potential health impact). Despite its
environmental footprint and potential to cause adverse health effects, Perc
continues to be the main chemical used in most dry cleaning.
EcoClean is an eco-friendly garment cleaner, and its professional wet cleaning is a
green alternative to dry cleaning. An independent Austin business since 1996,
EcoClean is a member of the Austin EcoNetwork, offers customers a great –and
green – experience with superior garment cleaning, and has free pick up and
delivery at over 400 doors, and desks, and growing city-wide.
Since September 2011, the PROPS program has helped a different local non-profit
organization each month, with 5% of all sales each Wednesday of that month going
to the nonprofit partner. The PROPS program gives EcoClean customers an easy way
to make a difference, and helps spread awareness of the issues facing the Austin
community and the powerful organizations working to solve them. Previous PROPS
recipients include Austin Pets Alive, Sustainable Food Center, Project Transitions,
Theatre Action Project, Hill Country Conservancy, SafePlace, Austin Lyric Opera,
Save Our Springs (SOS) Alliance and Keep Austin Beautiful (KAB).
The June PROPS partner, The Colorado River Foundation (CRF), has been increasing
community awareness of the Colorado River’s environmental and economic
importance since 1994. The Foundation’s goals are to:
 educate youth, with a focus on at-risk and minority youth, about the
environmental importance of the Colorado River
 host specific programs to clean up the river
 help citizens of all ages and from all economic backgrounds understand,
protect, use and enjoy the natural resources of Texas.
EcoClean is proud to contribute to their vision of a clean, abundant, accessible and
healthy Colorado River for generations to come.
“We appreciate EcoClean choosing Colorado River Foundation in June not only
because they promote environmental stewardship in the community but also for the
work they do to educate the community on the importance of protecting our
groundwater and natural resources. We are excited to promote “green” cleaning for
the health of our Colorado River in June!” says Erin O’Neil Franz, Executive Director
of CRF.
Austinites are encouraged to bring garment and household cleaning into EcoClean
any Wednesday to ensure 5% of your bill will go to a deserving charity. In June, 5%
of all Wednesday sales go to The Colorado River Foundation. Future month PROPS
partners will be announced over time.

About PROPS: PROPS is urban slang for PROPER RESPECT which was shortened to
PROPERS in the 1960s. In the song Respect, Otis Redding’s original line “… give me
my proper respect when you get home” was interpreted by Aretha Franklin as
“..give me my propers, when you come home.” The further abbreviated version,
PROPS, was popularized in the 1980’s by hip-hop artists and fans.
