Starting today and every Wednesday in the month of June, 5% of all sales at EcoClean will go to CRF, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of the Texas Colorado River. EcoClean is an Austin-local brand committed to community involvement in a number of ways including this PROPS program which has given nearly $5,000 to nine different local non profits. In February, the EPA classified Perc (Tetrachloroethylene), the chemical used in 70% of dry cleaning, as a likely human carcinogen. Additionally, Perc is the primary contaminant in over half of our country’s Superfund sites (hazardous waste sites on the EPA’s National Priority List based on potential health impact). Despite its environmental footprint and potential to cause adverse health effects, Perc continues to be the main chemical used in most dry cleaning. EcoClean is an eco-friendly garment cleaner, and its professional wet cleaning is a green alternative to dry cleaning. An independent Austin business since 1996, EcoClean is a member of the Austin EcoNetwork, offers customers a great –and green – experience with superior garment cleaning, and has free pick up and delivery at over 400 doors, and desks, and growing city-wide. The PROPS program gives EcoClean customers an easy way to make a difference, and helps spread awareness of the issues facing the Austin community and the powerful organizations working to solve them. In the song Respect, Otis Redding’s original line “… give me my proper respect when you get home” was interpreted by Aretha Franklin as “..give me my propers, when you come home.” The further abbreviated version, PROPS, was popularized in the 1980’s by hip-hop artists and fans.
