Teacher Certification Program
Information Session
Traditional Program
Texas State University offers a traditional teacher education
program with several delivery options.
We do not offer alternative certification, nor is our program the
quickest way to get certified.
We believe that well- educated, properly prepared teachers are
more likely to be successful in the classroom

Admission requirements
1. Be admitted to Texas State University
You must be accepted into Texas State before you will be able
to apply for admittance into the Teacher Education Program

2.75 overall GPA or last 60 hrs GPA
If you are in doubt about your GPA, apply to the Graduate College as a
teacher certification seeking student and your overall GPA and last 60 hours
GPA will be calculated. If you do not meet eligibility criteria for teacher
certification, you will receive notification from the Graduate College, followed
by a letter from the Office of Educator Preparation explaining how you can
become eligible.

Proficiency of the English language as
demonstrated in a written essay
completed in US 1100 class or during Saturday Seminar
4.
Three letters of recommendation
service learning/work supervisor, University professor,
approved personal reference
5.
Proficiency of speech and English language usage as
demonstrated in a screening interview conducted by
two faculty members
Admission requirements continued
6.
6 hours of service learning experience, defined as the
integration of community service related to teaching
children and/or adolescents
6. Complete and submit a disposition evaluation
8.
Upon meeting the requirements for admittance, a student
must submit an online application to the Office of Educator
Preparation and pay a processing fee by the required fall or
spring deadline.
Note:
Special certification programs, such as Career Alternatives in Special Education (CASE)
and Certification and Master of Education (CMED), or Teacher Recruitment Program
(TRP), Teacher Recruitment Program-Critical Shortage Areas (TRP-CSA) may have
different and/or additional requirements as stated in the guidelines for these programs.
Elementary Certifications
Early childhood - 6th grade
ESL Generalist
Certification: 36 credit hours plus student teaching
CMED*: 36 credit hours plus student teaching
Bilingual Generalist
Certification: 36 credit hours plus student teaching and
proficiency in Spanish
CMED*: 36 credit hours plus student teaching
and proficiency in Spanish
*Certification with a Master of Education

Composite
Mathematics- requires 24 hours of undergraduate credit in math
coursework
Science- requires 24 hours of undergraduate credit in science

undergraduate credit in science/math coursework
Additional coursework may be necessary due to the requirements stated above. If
the required 24 hours of content is completed at the time of admission, this
program is 36 hours plus 6 hours for student teaching for certification and a
Masters Degree (CMED).
Secondary Certification
Coursework requirements
- All certifications require 15 credit hours of Pedagogy and
Professional Responsibility coursework plus student
teaching for certification.
– Each area of certification requires 24 hours of undergraduate
credit coursework. If the required 24 hours of content is
completed at the time of admission, this program is 36 hours
plus 6 hours for student teaching for certification and a
Masters Degree (CMED).

These certifications require 15 credit hours of Pedagogy and
Professional Responsibility courses plus student teaching for
certification. Students may also need to complete additional or
remediation coursework in their selected content area to equal the
required 24 hours in the content area. 36 credit hours are required
for *CMED in secondary education.
*CMED = teacher certification and a masters degree in secondary education

Application Procedures
Apply to the Graduate College ($10 fee for certificationseeking, $40 or $50 fee for degree-seeking) and submit
official transcripts.
After receiving your acceptance letter from the Graduate
College, fill out the Certification Plan application and
submit the $75 fee to the Center for Student and
Professional Services in the Office of Educator Preparationeducation building 2016. Certification plans can take 4 to 6
weeks for processing and preparation and will not be
written until you have been accepted through the
Graduate College. We do not give refunds.
Attend a Mandatory Saturday Seminar.
A. Complete a timed-writing essay at the Saturday Seminar
to demonstrate proficiency in written communication.
B. Participate in a screening interview at the Saturday
Seminar.
C. Provide three letters of recommendation from professors,
service learning/work supervisors, or other professor/
instructor approved references at or after the Saturday
Seminar.
D. Submit documentation of at least six hours of service
learning
experiences, defined as the integration of
community service
related to teaching at or after the
Graduate College admission deadlines
for degree- seeking and certificationseeking only students






No Summer Admission from 2012 forward
It is possible to begin as certification-seeking and switch to
degree-seeking through the Graduate College; however,
only 6 hours of Post-Graduate coursework taken as a
certification-seeking only student can be applied to a degree
program once admitted as a degree-seeking student.
Office of Educator Preparation
application deadlines
 Students seeking admittance to the teacher preparation
program must submit an online application to the Office of
Educator Preparation by the last Friday of September to start
coursework in the following session or semester. Admittance
to the program is effective for three years from the time of
acceptance.

Certification Course Options
Certification courses are offered at the Graduate level for all
Post-Baccalaureate students. These courses are offered in
the following ways:
 Evening courses at the San Marcos campus
 Evening courses at the Round Rock Higher Education
Center
 Online courses (available for Secondary/All-level students
only)
 Some coursework is available during the day…must see an
advisor for information regarding daytime courses.
 Additional coursework needed for the content area will not
be available online or in Round Rock in most cases.
